When prosecutor Maggie Hughes pointed out that the banner did not mention extremists Mathewson said: "That's what I meant by those who threaten us and our way of life.'"

Evidently English grammar was not taught in Ms Hughes' school. If Mr. Mathewson had intended his condemnation to apply to all Muslims (as opposed to just the ones who threaten), the message would have required a comma between the clauses of the first sentence.
