Carter Book Slaps Israel With ‘Apartheid’ Tag, Provides Ammo to GOP

Forward Staff | Tue. Oct 17, 2006 Former President Jimmy Carter is set to release his latest book, “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid.”

Judging from an advance review manuscript of the new work, published by Simon & Schuster and set for release November 14, Carter appears to place the bulk of the blame on Israel for its continuing conflict with the Palestinians. But his critics will probably be most offended by the use of the word “apartheid” in the title.

The book comes as the Republican Jewish Coalition is already waging a nationwide media campaign to convince Jewish voters that the Democratic Party can no longer be counted on to provide unflinching support for Israel. One of the recent RJC ads features a large image of Carter and quotes the former president as saying “I don’t think Israel has any legal or moral justification for their massive bombing of the entire nation of Lebanon.”

The RJC’s executive director, Matt Brooks, told the Forward that he has yet to see the book but seemed confident that it would provide additional ammunition for his organization’s campaign to woo Jewish voters.

“We certainly have not shied away from shining a light on some of his misguided and outrageous comments about Israel in the past, so we certainly have to see what this book holds,” Brooks said. “Obviously we will look to key Democratic leaders and hear what they have to say about it. So far, there’s been nothing but silence on the part of the Democratic establishment in terms of holding Carter accountable.”

The book was originally slated to be released November 1 — six days prior to this year’s congressional elections — but will now be available in stores November 14, according to Simon & Schuster spokeswoman Elizabeth Hayes.

Jewish Democrats say that they were pushing for a later release date. But, according to Hayes, the release date was pushed back to allow Carter time to work in more material from last summer’s conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

“We held on to the manuscript because he kept writing because of the whole Lebanon situation — so we are running behind schedule, and now we are on stands November 14,” Hayes said.

Over 25 years since he's had any power, but apartheid, that's worse than the humiliation of occupation isn't it?

Clearly an issue elections are decided on.

Carter using the word "apartheid", Condi using the word "Occupation" and James Baker "I love Israel" running the show presently - it will all be fine!

They all got together recently, I've got a pic. They seem happy

Simon and Schuster is no openly releasing books based on partisan ends. They released David Kuo's hit peace on the president 3 months early, but moved this book back!

I have to grudgingly give them credit for being politically savvy enough to push the release date back. Maybe it will cause many Jews to abandon dems in 2008 if they remember feeling betrayed right after this election.

What makes Jimmy Carter think that anyone cares what he has to say?

Oh, year, the Lamestream Media.

To take Jimmy Carter seriously is to think that Hillary (if that is her real name) will be the next president, and that algore will be her ambassador to the UN, and that north korea will apologize for their behavior and nancy pelosi will be the next speaker of the house, and the list goes on. Noone has ever taken him seriously, even when he was president and told everyone to use less of everything and begin to save the world. See, he thought he was a visionary,a great peacemaker. WE all saw that he was a gutless bastard with too big of a smile. Well, guess what? He remains one of our biggest embarassments to this day.

Good grief if I were him I'd found a rock to crawl under till death do us part.

Imagine the contrast between Carter's funeral and Ronald Reagan's. Especially, imagine the contrast in the public's reaction to the event.

And, then, consider the MSM's amazement...

I think it's Limbaugh that says that Nixon's funeral pushed
Carter, or pushed Roslyn(sp?) to push Carter off the deep edge.

Everybody said nice things about Richard Milhous Nixon.

When it came to dreary funerals, LBJ's will be hard to beat,
but Carter have been constantly proving he can always find
new bottoms.

"His greatest success is to have caused many Democrats to leave their parents' party."

For "greatest" read "only" and you'd be closer to the mark.

The Dems could have got anyone, anyone at all, elected in 1976. They chose this worthless boob (and almost lost).

Every bad thing that has happened to them since is still not enough penance for this - they will pay for years yet.

Hey, how about us folks? We're still suffering the consequences of his bungling and ineptitude (Can you say "Shah", "hostages", "Khomeini" and "islamofascism"?)
