Cardinals Beat Mets, 1 Game From Series
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 10/18/2006 | Mike Fitzpatrick (AP)

A big swing by Albert Pujols and another playoff gem from a rejuvenated Jeff Weaver put the St. Louis Cardinals on the cusp of the World Series.

Pujols' homer helped the Cardinals get to Tom Glavine at last, and Weaver shut down the New York Mets for a 4-2 victory Tuesday night and a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven NL championship series.

I never, never, never want to see Steve Trachsel pitching in a Mets uniform again.

Maybe you can get NY-NJ local boy Jason Marquis to take his place. Then he can be the Marquis of Queens Borough.

Nobody here in St. Louis ever wants to see Jason the Horror Star pitching in a Cards' uniform again.

BTW, I never want to see Trachsel pitch ANYWHERE again. He is the Human Rain Delay of pitching.

That's the nickname Mike Hargrove had when he played in regards to his batting. Imagine Trachsel facing Hargrove. :)

The Mets and Hillary are mutually exclusive. She's a Cubs er a...Yankee er a who's in first place, where am I campaigning? Which way is the wind blowing? The Mets can never be counted out! Remember 86!!!

I'm rooting for the Cards. I would love to see a World Series rematch of the Cards and the Tigers, just like in '68.

GO CARDS! Tiger bait!

''With a Flash out of Fordham, they knocked in runs and scored 'em''
''The Gas House Gang was full of fight and nerve.''
''The Redbirds were the rage; the 'Wild Horse of the O-sage' ''
''And Paul and Dizzy were keepin' 'em busy with heat and curves...''

Are these lyrics from "We're talking baseball, baseball in St. Lou"?

If so, do you have the rest of the lyrics. I've been looking for them on the internet and can't find them. I think the song was written during the 80's, and had different lyrics for different teams.

While Albert Pujos was at the plate facing Glavin, Joe Buck was telling us all about the verbage spewed by Pujos...that he thought Glavin wasn't good in his 2-0 victory in Game 1...that the Cards hit the ball hard and just didn't get any breaks...hitting the ball right at the defense.

It was a great setup for a Pujos fall.

So what does Pujos do? Goes yard!

There went the 11 innings streak of scoreless ball and more importantly, the hex was broken.

It's a shame because I like the METS team and their manager...but not more than Tony LaRussa and Jim Edmonds.

All peace and blessing be upon the Mets! Allah crushes spirit of Cardinals!

This is all going to plan, since I have tickets to Game 7, if necessary.

Once, Hargrove was up at the plate and doing his usual schtick between pitches.

Orioles' catcher Rick Dempsey on the throw back to the pitcher nailed Hargrove HARD upside the head....knocked his helmet off.

Not a wives' tale...

I'd much rather face the Mets, there is no way they are going to out-slug the Tigers. The Cards have much better pitching, and that's going to make for a tough series.

Yes, they are. No, I don't have the whole lyric (drat!).

The lyric was written specifically in 1983, to the same tune (by the same writer, whose name I can't recall, sheesh), as ''Willie, Mickey, Duke''. He wrote something like 18 of these.

Here's an old Steve Goodman one for the Cubbies...heh heh heh.

Do they still play the blues in Chicago,
When baseball season rolls around?
As the snow melts away, do the Cubbies still play
In their ivy-covered burial ground?

When I was a boy, they were my pride and joy,
But now they only bring fatigue
To the land of the free and the home of the brave
As the doormats of the National League.

Go Cards!

The Mets cranked out more runs this season than Detroit, 834 to 822, despite the fact that every ninth Mets’ batter was a pitcher.

But they have to get to the Series before they can slap around the Detroit pitching.

Did you see George Will's column the other day? He had a riddle:

How are the Cubs and the Cardinals alike?
Answer: Neither team has won a World Series in their new ballpark.

Hey, I'm rooting for your Mets. Love to see that pitching staff of Glavin and the seven dwarfs face the Tigers. Go Mets. Tigers in FOUR.
