The United States could be rife with Internet addicts as clinically ill as alcoholics, an unprecedented study released suggested.
Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine in Silicon Valley said their telephone survey indicated more than one of every eight US residents showed at least one sign of "problematic Internet use."
The findings backed those of previous, less rigorous studies, according to Stanford.
Most disturbing was the discovery that some people hid their Internet surfing, or went online to cure foul moods in ways that mirrored alcoholics using booze, according to the study's lead author, Elias Aboujaoude.
"In a sense, they're using the Internet to self-medicate," Aboujaoude said. "And obviously something is wrong when people go out of their way to hide their Internet activity."
According to preliminary research, the typical Internet addict was a single, college-educated, white male in his 30s, who spends approximately 30 hours a week on non-essential computer use.

My first thought was exactly that.
Heh, you still use Saran Wrap?
I would say 'bored' more than indoctrinated.
I saw yesterday where the Discovery Channel had a program called "The ACLU Files". DC has let me down.
who spends approximately 30 hours a week on non-essential computer use.Pikers!
That's what I say. I can kill 30 hours in an afternoon when I'm using about fifteen windows at a time.
You mean you haven't contracted those chores out years ago? I did. J/k
I've got it bad...but if you were a horse, they'd have to shoot ya! LOL!!!
If it helps I will hate kinoxi's parents.
No really. I AM laughing out LOUD!!!!
Hi Txsleuth. :-)
"...I am sad for you..."
Why French? I don't know...it seemed appropriately silly. Fortunately, I had no expectation to have crushed by reality...
He doesn't he speed reads blogs and forums then posts the lil siren thingy as breaking news.
The ones who will start the political drive to tax it.
By the hour, of course.
They led the way with tobacco, and this will most likely be next.
Good federal point Batman.
Cut me that socialist check!
Someone told me you can run keyboards thru the dish machine. Just have to let them air out for a couple of days afterwards.
May try it once when I get a spare board. Can't afford to be down for a couple of days.
Ditto.
Just got rid of TV/cable entirely. Video entertainment now is either DVDs (suddenly I have time to actually watch the "special features") or Internet (mostly chat boards and streaming video).
Newspapers suck. Poorly written, mostly uninteresting, and outdated the moment the ink dried. Between Google News and Drudge pulling up the best stuff from all sources, do I really need newspapers? maybe as firestarter or birdcage flooring.
Will admit there is a certain draw for the mindles pap of channel surfing. Not worth the $$$ though.
It's totally educational - I love being able to look stuff up whenever I want. The net is a great thing for a hungry mind... plus the excellent friends I met online when we never would have crossed paths.
But watching 30 hours of "non essential" TV in a week and one is simply a NORMAL AMURIKAN.
Well, if it stinks too bad, we'll just stop it and throw in an oldie like "The Fugitive" or a good western.
