Arnold's lead is making downticket races more competitive and in several, the R candidate has a chance of actually winning.

Were Westley the challenger Arnold would have a much harder time. We can thank Angelides for this turn of events, not the Grovelnator.

So why is McClintock having a hard time with Garamendi? I thought Schwarzenegger and McClintock got along well in 2003.

I've been on the record here for a long time saying that Schwarzenegger does not have coattails, or if he does he chooses not to use them. He has appointed Democrats to senior positions that Republicans could have been "groomed" from. He doesn't campaign with Republicans (that I've seen in the media -- maybe one or two here or there). He recently appeared at a Willie Brown fundraiser with Barbara Boxer and Don Perata (Angelides was a no-show). He refused to announce his candidacy at a GOP convention, but went on the Tonight Show instead.

Just how much campaigning for down-ticket Republicans has Schwarzenegger done? I honestly don't know.
