Tancredo is running everybody. He's running for POTUS in 2008, and not in the GOP primary. He's running as a 3rd party type, the Ross Perot of the 21st century. Tancredo will split the center-right vote and allow hitlary to squeeze her fat ass through the Oval Office door.

We can certainly send China a message that their failures around NK can be returned with our deeper relations with Taiwan.

This is why this guy will NEVER be close to the Presidency.

The only people the North Koreans will listen to are MAYBE the Chinese. But let's go ahead and piss of the Chinese so then they will stone us with North Korea.

Great foresight Tancredo.

Gotta be honest here, Mike. China is sticking their thumb in our eye every chance they get due to both parties' need to appease them.

Tancredo is a leader, he's willing to stand up and fight and he's much more than a one-dimensional candidate. He's been making some good foreign policy statements. I'd like to see him run for President, definetly. He's the last line of defense between a sovreign America & a globalist America.

China will stab us in the back anyway.

True, but short of declaring all out war on North Korea, and I don't honestly think that's the best course of action at this time (and I don't think Tancredo does either), we need the Chinese to be there for any other reason than for them to keep the North Koreans at the table.

As it is, with NoKo looking at another test eventually (there are reports that it might be soon on another thread), we can bet that Japan will seriously start thinking about remilitarizing along with the South Koreans stepping it up a notch.

The Chinese don't want that either.

Or they will have to face the prospect of a rearmed Japan and a newly militant South Korea.....

We don't need to antagonize the Chinese at the moment so I just don't see the point in it.

I don't think appease is the right word.

They aren't the problem here.

The North Koreans are.

I'm just of the opinion that we can let the sleeping dog named Taiwan alone at this point an time and not to distract from the mission at hand.

This is Tancredo showing his absolute lack of skill in this arena. He wants to get a hit in on China over Taiwan when we have bigger fish to fry.

Tancredo actually thinks he has anything useful to say to Condi about foreign affairs???

Assuming that Tommy the Tank actually is smarter than Condi and that she needed him to remind her to ask Taiwan for help, why publicly announce the letter? What can possibly be gained by needlessly antagonizing the Chinese? Can Taiwan actually put as much pressure on NK as China?

The reason the letter was publicly disclosed was not to help United States Foreign Policy but to garner attention. This story is proof (not that it was needed) that Tancredo is an exhibitionist, not a serious statesman.

Memo to Tancredo: Nixon went to Beijing. You are over thirty years out of date.

That would be a scream.

Won't happen, though. I don't think we have the courage or whatever it would take. Then there'd be enormous wailing from across the straight.

"let the sleeping dog named Taiwan alone at this point an time and not to distract from the mission at hand."

Some will say Tancredo is posturing. I say Taiwan is being abandoned. The 'mission at hand' must include not abandoning strategic US allies. Chicom is NOT our friend, it's a business associate--and a treacherous one at that.

Hey, if the GOP won't sponsor Tancredo they deserve everything that falls out from it, even a hillarat presidency. The GOP is becoming disfunctional. No direction, just plain ole get along politics. When will they wake up and start fighting? They lay back like cowering dogs when the demorats hit them and don't know how to advance a charge, and if they do, they won't do it. They allow the justice department to continually investigate Republicans but when demorats should have charges brought against them, like Reid, they do nothing.

If we actually recognized Taiwan as a nation instead of a pseudo-nation, that would be one thing.

this is very distracting to the issue at hand. It's irrelevant.

If Taiwan feels abandoned with a Carrier Battle Group that is SURELY in the area, there is absolutely nothing a visit from Secretary Rice will do to alleviate that.

Again this is just Tancredo proving he has no talent for international relations. He's great in the House and he should stay there.

Why do you think it matters whether we cheese off the Chinese? They'll manipulate NK as it serves their interests, not ours (even if we say "pretty please" and act real nice to them). The only way we'll get China to help us with this is through arm twisting of some sort.

As for Taiwan, I wish we'd be more supportive of them and grant them access to more modern weapons, especially in light of the advances the Reds have made. Can you imagine us treating the Soviets the way we treat the Red Chinese.
