TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Aravaipa Canyon, a coveted southern Arizona hiking spot, is no longer what it used to be. The area's wet summer dramatically altered the wilderness area about 50 miles northeast of Tucson, creating possibly record creek flows that scoured vegetation from the stream bed of Aravaipa Creek and flooded homes and ranches at the mouth of its 11-mile wilderness canyon.
[snip]
Scientists are still measuring the flood. The streamflow gauge recorded 6,000 cubic feet per second before it was washed away. The preliminary estimates of the U.S. Geological Survey were between 18,000 and 25,000 cubic feet of water per second, but O'Neill and the residents are certain it's far more than that.
[snip]
Chris Smith of the U.S. Geological Survey, said his agency will attempt a more accurate reading of the peak flows in response to reports from residents who say the creek was 1- to 3-feet higher than it had been in the record flood of 1983, which the USGS estimated at 70,000 cubic feet per second.
While the numbers may be in flux, the devastation is obvious.
The stream bed has widened tremendously in spots and cut deep in others. It is littered with the remains of cottonwoods and other trees, in addition to vehicles and portions of homes and other buildings.

:oP
I hate it when that happens.

Why do I bother trying to read adult commentary and intelligent discourse online any more. Every single thread I've opened in the last hour has had this incredibly relevant and profound comment from you stating that a certain politician should leave his post. Usually this same deep thought is accompanied with some (to you) witty remark to some fellow poster. How positively 3rd grade.
I'm getting sick to death of your puerile and inane "Reid must resign" schtick. It's about half as funny as the whole "Bush's fault" crap was for its first 12 1/2 seconds. Now it's as juvenile as the Nissan ad where buddy in the telescope building sez "Hey guys, I can see Uranus".
Get over whatever crawled up your a** and died already. Sheesh!
This WAS at one time a website where adults interacted civilly, and had intelligent discourse. Please, give me (and others, I am sure) a break, and cease and desist the stupidity.
Don`t hold back; tell him how you really feel.
*ducking quickly*
Periodic flooding replenishes the land with nutrients - great for growing food - not a place to build in. It's like playing on the middle yellow line...
I agree. Pithy comments, thought by the posters to be witty, are taking over from the thoughtful comment that was originally FR's hallmark.
Don't they periodically flood the Grand Canyon for just that reason?
Strikes me to my core with that one...............thump.
The snarky comments aren't half as bad as the sick jokes ("gallows humor")on threads about some poor soul that was tortured, raped or brutally killed in a bizarre way.
Not the GC, but the areas below the major dams on the Colo river are flooded (now) to help maintain the habitat.
Just be sure to check with the BoR before you go fishing in a narrow canyon area.
"Lighten up, Francis."
