Do you have the full context to put the quote in the proper light?

Dannatt revised his comments since he first spoke on the matter, and the texts of his revisions are published now. Don't be misled by quotes from those. Here are some quotes of his original words. The context is unmistakable.

That is a fact. I dont say that the difficulties we are experiencing round the world are caused by our presence in Iraq but undoubtedly our presence in Iraq exacerbates them." [...] "
The original intention was that we put in place a liberal democracy that was an exemplar for the region, was pro West and might have a beneficial effect on the balance within the Middle East."
"
That was the hope, whether that was a sensible or naïve hope history will judge. I dont think we are going to do that. I think we should aim for a lower ambition."

Thanks for proving my point - you are selectively distributing polls to engender the idea that there is some deep seated hatred in Britain of America. It's not true. What the British left says, however, is that we fight alongside the Americans and we get nothing for it - people like you prove the point. Our boys can bleed, but people like you can't keep your anglophobia to yourself.
Anything that divides or undermines the alliance, and supports the media's agenda instead, is doing the work of the terrorists. You're their lackey. You are Al Qaeda's buttboy.
BTW, the only reason *I* have for thinking less of Americans is the behaviour of people like yourself, who work on trying to find anything to hit the British with. Don't think that this attitude amongst yourself and others doesn't go unnoticed by others here as well.

By the way, even the liberal
Pew GLobal Attitudes Report shows that the support of the British for America is the highest amongst any EU nation over time. 56% of Britons have a favourable opinion of the United States. One wonders why you go after the British with hammer and tongs as opposed to come countries which genuinely hate you like the Germans, French and Spanish.

A much higher percentage of Americans have a favorable opinion of the UK, but that's not because we're being told the truth about British opinion toward us.

And apparently, many Britons have given different answers to American surveys from those given to British surveys.

A much higher percentage of Americans have a favorable opinion of the UK, but that's not because we're being told the truth about British opinion toward us.Wrong. I've seen American news and entertainment. It's very rare that American news covers anything to do with Britain (unless it's to do with royalty) and the entertainment in America regards us as rather quaint, if somewhat backwards and eccentric (see: Family Guy).
In contrast, American politics is covered on a daily basis here - we are exposed to your internal debates in a way that you're rarely exposed to ours. In spite of the screaming lefties, John Kerry, et al - Britain still regards America as its closest ally, and has an affection for America not matched by any EU country.
Again, you go at Britain with hammer and tongs, meanwhile Germany, France, et al - do not contribute troops, and despise America more. You sit yourself - arrogantly, in my view - as some sort of arbiter as to what Europeans (and Britons) have to do - and totally disregard the actual sacrifices that have been made. I reiterate, you're carrying the terrorists' water.

And apparently, many Britons have given different answers to American surveys from those given to British surveys. Laughable. Pew is a leftist research organisation - they had every reason in the world to solicit negative answers (and stack the questions this way), and still the response was positive.

By the way, some context for the result -
LINK
Great Britain
Sample design: Probability
Mode: Telephone adults 18 plus
Languages: English, Urdu, and Arabic
Fieldwork dates: April 4-26, 2006
Sample size: 902 including a 412 Muslim oversample; sample is weighted to be representative of the general population
Margin of Error: 6%
Representative: Telephone households
In spite of this questionable method, intended to get a negative result, the result was positive in terms of British attitudes towards the USA.

You are quite right our opinion of the British is a lot better than their opinion is of us. I just read that entire poll. The results are truly very hurtful. I wouldn't call any "friend" vulgar, but 65% of them have no problem applying that word to us. This is quite amazing to me, and very, very eye opening.
I am so sick of this world. I am so sick of the world calling us "uncaring," when we pour our hearts out to help people in need. I am so sick of being portrayed as evil when our young men and women lay down their lives to protect those who can't protect themselves. I am so sick of so-called "friends" who hate us more than our enemies do, and have absolutely no misgivings at saying so. But most of all I am sick to death of Americans being so freaking stupid and blind to what is going on out there.

Roma est perdita Hehehe! Somebody in the new world who indulge in speaking Latin, the language of the old world. The quotation in your tagline contains a pretty irony. :-)
The original reads:
Hierosolyma est perdita (HEP)
It is a phrase that the Romans used as a taunt of the jews after Jerusalem was destroyed 70 a.D.. Let's hope that the cruel original never comes true again! The shortcut HEP was used under antisemitic "intellectuals" (as if they ever could be called intelligent) until the 3rd Reich. Shalom Jerusalem!
To: Atlantic Bridge
Your words were well researched and well said. Yes, I'm taunting the remnants of Rome.

hey man, don't let him bother you. he's conveniently ignoring the fact that we have our fair share of military who are critical of the administration and the conduct of the war. though I dont condone it, it does come with having a society made up of HUMANS.
welcome to Free Republic, and I hope you stick around and don't get discouraged by the overly-critical minority.
and if you dont mind my asking, where did you do you undergrad studies?

You may want to ping Mad Ivan. He's a good guy, and a few years ago, I invited him to visit us at our home the next time he comes to the USA.
Aussie Dasher is another good bloke that talks funny too (just kidding).
No one I know on FR ever puts down the Brits or Aussies.
