Wakim Enters Homestretch with Financial Advantage (over Mollohan)
Huntington News ^ | Oct. 16, 2006

Embattled Congressman Alan Mollohan, D-WV showed exactly how dire his situation has become Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006, with his Federal Election Commission report showing almost $75,000 less cash-on-hand than surging challenger, Chris Wakim. The tally: Wakim: $320,341; Mollohan: $248,241. On top of his already significant advantage, Wakim will benefit from a fundraiser headlined by Senator John McCain and Congresswoman Capito, as well as the RNC’s Joint Campaign Committee which raises funds from donors across the country and has resulted in up to $75,000 to candidates in the past.

Wakim said, “Between the fundraiser hosted by Senator McCain and Congresswoman Capito on Monday and the RNC’s Joint Campaign Committee, we are in a great position to carry our message to every part of the district. With the continued support of the hundreds of donors across the West Virginia who have already contributed, we will be able to remind voters that Alan Mollohan has been too busy taking care of himself and his political friends to do the job for us."

I believe there are at least two seats in Georgia and one in Florida that the GOP may pick up as well.

Republicans have a significant monetary advantage on local, state, and federal levels. According to the Democrat National Media, the GOP base is deeply divided on issues. Yet the people who are completely disgusted at the party keep giving it money.

There is certainly no Dem-held seat in Florida that the GOP might pick up this year, but GA-08 and GA-12 are definitely competitive.

I am good friends with the person who heads up the RNC's direct mail operation. The RNC is awash in money this year. Most of it is going to the ground operation, which is vast.

Are there enough volunteers this year? I don't mean people whose names are on a list, but people who have RECENTLY committed to work this election -- or better yet, who are ALREADY working this election -- IN THE KEY STATES AND DISTRICTS.

Does your source know about this? If there's any good news in this respect, it would be great to post it on FReep -- all over FReep. With so many of our alleged strategists talking defeat, it would be nice to see something more upbeat, if factually based.

Talent-McCaskill polls here (along with all the other competitive Senate races):

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2006/senate/

Navigate the site, and you can find the key house races also.

The Senate looks pretty bad. The good news is, along with some good conservatives we are losing Linc Chafee. Also Kyl and Allen are hanging on to their seats. Kyl's good.

The House... who cares? Denny Hastert is a corrupt toadstool, who never showed any concern about passing legislation, but was finally stirred to action in defence of William Jefferson's freezer full of bribe money. Jefferson was a Democrat, but he was closer to Hastert's political position than you or I.

It's pretty hard for me to get any pity up for the Republican Congress. They swept in in 1994, promptly discarded the key point in the Contract with America that swept them in, and enjoyed a dozen years of increasing corruption and greed.

This is largely Bush's doing, and one of the biggest reasons was his unwillingness to use the veto to reign in the earmark-giddy crooks on the other end of the mall.

Go away. You can resurface after the election. If you won't support our party, OK, that's your right. But don't preach nonsupport for the team in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl. Grow up.

I asked myself the same question. This is a district President Bush took by 54%. Sometimes I wonder if the political strategists just write off West Virginia except on Presidential election years. West Virginia should be as red as Mississippi and Alabama the fact that it isn't shows the GOP still doesn't understand the state well.
