Black US senator not ruling out White House run - Barack Obama

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US Senator Barack Obama, a rising political star who generates extensive media coverage, is reportedly leaving the door open to a 2008 presidential run.

The Democratic lawmaker appears on Time magazine's cover, coinciding with the release of his latest book, "The Audacity of Hope," which sets out his political views.

Asked if he will enter the race for the White House once November's midterm legislative elections are out of the way, Obama, 45, avoids offering a definitive answer, but appears to be more seriously weighing the idea.

"When the election is over and my book tour is done, I will think about how I can be most useful to the country and how I can reconcile that with being a good dad and a good husband," he is quoted as saying by Time.

"I haven't completely decided or unraveled that puzzle yet," said Obama, the only African-American currently serving in the US Senate.

Obama generates strong enthusiasm among Democratic party activists but some pundits have warned that a presidential run in 2008 might be too much too soon for the young and inexperienced senator. Others believe that the United States may not be quite ready for a black president.

In an excerpt from his new book, Obama argued that progressives should not shy away from referring to religion and faith in political discussions.

"Over the long haul, I think we make a mistake when we fail to acknowledge the power of faith in the lives of the American people, and so avoid joining a serious debate about how to reconcile faith with our modern, pluralistic democracy," Obama writes in the passage of his book carried in Time.

Such an approach is "bad politics" and cedes ground to partisans on the right, he said.

"When we abandon the field of religious discourse -- when we ignore the debate about what it means to be a good Christian or Muslim or Jew; when we discuss religion only in the negative sense of where or how it should not be practiced ... others will fill the vacuum," he said.

Wouldn't this be great? The dems would have to watch everything they said on a racial issue. They would be tippy toeing like Tiny Tim thru the tulips. What a sight that would be.

LOL, Sister T....

I still stand behind my statement that this guy will be VP someday....

but I apologize for this stupid statement:

If you're a black, female voter...he has appeal.

My brain was not engaged when I posted that. Sorry.

he's not dirty

Read about half way down, if you don't want to read the whole article. Here's a snippet "Andy Martin calls this a "fictitious family history" and he calls it a lie. He says he has conducted an investigation which has gathered information from three continents, and Obama’s father was in fact never a lowly “goat herder”. He claims his father was a child of privilege and affluence. His research, which I have now confirmed, indicates the Obama family was a prominent Muslim family in Kenya. His father and step-father were Muslims. He was also Muslim at birth but converted according to him at a very early age. His grandfather was involved with the Mau-Mau in Africa. He was reared by his white mother and family in Hawaii. It was my understanding that there was no such thing as an ex-muslim. Once a Muslim, always a Muslim.

I don't like him.

I don't trust him.

He's too slick and reminds me of 'slick willie'.

I understood what you were trying to say and found nothing "stupid" about it.

I just don't see the appeal with this guy.

Black Arab US senator not ruling out White House run

He's half Arab, so why isn't he "Arab"? His grandparents were Muslim. His father was a member of a dictatorial African regime. His background is far from clean, yet the media will not touch it.

He speaks well, but that in and of itself is not sufficient for him to be considering a Presidential run at this stage.

If he was a Republican, the media would be saying that if he was considering a Presidential run, that he was unqualified and overreaching himself.

The same standard applies in this instance. He is overreaching himself and does not have sufficient experience to consider this.

"They think after one term, they are presidential material."

The guy hasn't even been a senator for two years yet. He ranks #99 in seniority(ahead of Salazar)only because Illinois has a larger population than Colorado.

"What has he accomplished that makes his capable of being President of this great country?"

He was a state senator before beating carpetbagger Keyes for the Senate seat. He has served in the Senate less than 2 years.

Illinois must have a thing for reserving a black senate seat. Whose seat did he get, Carol Mostly Fraud's? (a little levity, there) And who did he beat? Keyes. (a lot of levity, there)

I don't think so. He didn't become prominent until after the beast begrudgingly left DC with the silverware, and Sandy Burgler was too busy with other matters!
