update: all the power is on now on Maui. I got it around a little after noon. Oahu is only about 15% on but will be total by tomorrow. Most actual damage is on the Big Island as it was closest to the epicenter. No one reported killed and I don't believe there are very many injuries either. Aloha

On Maui the main road to the west side (Lahaina, Kaanapali) is closed. Trouble is, the only other way of access has stuff like this on it and it's barely one lane wide in places !

You have to figure that reopening the Honoapi'ilani highway has to be the number one priority on Maui, now that the power is back on. That other road (the Kahekili Highway) isn't really built to handle even moderate traffic under normal conditions.

Good report, mostly property damages and little damage to people. It seems it was about the strength of the one we had in '94 and that was a doozy. For sure, Hawaii will be the big story on the morning news tomorrow. Aloha

We'll see how the media spins this against Bush.

Yes indeed. Can you imagine heavy two way traffic around Kahakuloa ? Total chaos & someone would probably go over the edge.
Mind you, Hwy30 is no joy sometimes, we made the mistake of arriving on Halloween about three years ago, took three hours to get from airport to rented Kahana condo as it seemed the whole island was going to Lahaina for the party - and a late night wreck closed it until about 10am the next day !

Granted, my Geology background's a bit rusty, being nearly 2 decades behind me, but is Seismic activity of this nature 'normal' for the Islands? Granted there is tremendous volcanic activity, but in the case of Hawaii, its located over a 'Hot Spot.' The volcanism is not directly associated with plate intersection (friction). And its type of rock structures are generally stable, are they not?!

T'was obviously a result of Bush not signing onto Kyoto and Cheney "accidently" shooting a tiki god.

I wouldn't worry 'bout it: N. Korea can NOT initiate a test that big.

No dick-head we will not negotiate with you: instead we will f#Wk you. Come on, giver your bestest shot...

Sir, we dutifullly notify you that we will stand here for a certain indiscriminate period of time. Then WE WILL PUMMLE YOU!

We will beat you so resoundedly that you will not be able to discern the next two months, 50 years, or the last four thousand years.

No we will not negotiate with you. We will negoiate with a collective party of six world-wide-entities who have an interest in the outcome of negotiations.

It looks like the epicenter was not far from my favorite Big Island town - Ahole.

Power restored at Honolulu Airport

Electricity at Honolulu International Airport has been restored and the airport is fully operational, said state tourism liaison Marsha Wienert. Wienert said power was restored about 6:15 p.m.

"Everything's back up to normal," she said. "And all flight schedules tomorrow will be on schedule."

MECO has restored power on Maui (with only a few pockets still out).

The Department of Water Supply and the Department of Public Works & Environmental Management Wastewater Reclamation Division have reported all systems are operational.

Kahului Airport is open, with all airlines running normally except all United Airlines flights have been cancelled for the remainder of today, but all United passengers have been re-booked on other United flights.

amazing maps at USGS huh.

Well we have to sign off and get some respite from news.

Prayers continue.

We are gonna lighten up with Shaggy Dog DVD (2nd time) and then hit the hay.

Take care.

Fox News showing people filling their cars with gas. Good grief people, you are in Hawaii! It isn't like you need to fill up for a 500 mile road trip. If you have a quarter of a tank it will still probably last a week or more!

I did have a big chuckle when travelling around Oahu during a trip there several years back, and realized I was travelling on an "Interstate" highway. Just what other state is it going to connect to, I wondered?!!! :-)
