Son just called. Does anyone know anything?
Civil Defense Agency Incident: Earthquake Update
Nothing new yet, but it may a good place to check for updates since this site is still up.
Yep, I've got USGS cellphone alert, as well as email alert. Been getting their alerts for a while.
A couple Hawaiian freepers posted earlier in the thread saying that they were fine, but power's out through most of the state, so chances are that there's lots of folks who can't get online to report how they're doing. Still, there haven't been any reports of loss of life - minor injuries have been reported, but nothing major.
Hadn't heard about the flash flood warnings, although I did hear the rain eased up according to the Hawaii Channel feed.
I think you are right. BTW, did you know Kerry served in Vietnam?
Pics of boulders and rock slides blocking roads coming in now.
One fellow on the island said he had to call Cali to see what was going on in his local area.
Another report from a 4th generation native that never have been hit like this to his knowledge.
CNN has KITV from the island playing. The news station is located 150 miles away from the epicenter.
I'm in Illinois and have earthquake insurance....lol
My great-aunt Pearl lived there, in Anchorage, at that time. I have pictures that she took and a week-long "journal" that she kept.
Absolutely amazing. One picture (and I think this scene hit national sources) is taken from the middle of the street looking toward the businesses lining the street. It is looking at a building ROOF (at street level), where the side of the street had fallen two stories.
That was in the Captain Cook area, which is south of Kailua-Kona.
Interesting. A similar theory was proposed regarding the Canary Islands generating a "mega tsunami" which would affect the East coast of the U.S. The idea didn't stand up to scrutiny though. Turns out the tsunami resulting from such a collapse would be less than 2 meters.
Are you in the quake area?
Either you have nerves of steel or you are pumped up to watch a good football game. : )
Hwy 30 from Maui airport to west Maui closed due to rockslides. That'll be a mess and who would want to drive the only other way to/from west Maui in these conditions - a really narrow ledge hacked out of the cliff in places !
My ex-husband is with Youth With A Mission on the Big Island. We heard from him. He is OK. Says it was quite a shaker. Says people are asked to get outside so says there are lots of people standing around in parking lots. It appears that it could have been much worse!! Our son (living in Santa Barbara) was really scared. Thank Goodness for cell phones.
Without getting my policy out, I don't think it's all that high....
Oh my! That is the most bizarre EQ map I have ever seen since being a avid watcher dating back to 1998.
(internet access made hobby a multi daily event)
Been interested all my life.
Kona coast. Time to buy coffee futures?
I think I've seen the photo you're talking about... everything is where it's not supposed to be. The street asphalt is cracked and on its sides...
TV just put up a pic from the airport as I read your post.
Flights are incoming but no out going.
Perhaps only incoming for planes already in the air, I don't know.
I'm sure this earthquake is a result of Bush's failure to implement the Kyoto treaty.
