GOP All but Cedes the Race to Feinstein
LA Times ^ | 1/15/06 | Scott Martelle

Posted on 10/15/2006 10:10:19 AM PDT by NormsRevenge

The Republican candidate for one of California's two seats in the Senate — potentially one of the most powerful legislative positions in the country — walked alone into a banquet room at the Pomona Valley Mining Co. restaurant on a recent morning and looked around.

The regular meeting of the California Federation of Republican Women, Southern Division, was underway, and the candidate, Dick Mountjoy, portly beneath a shock of white hair, stood mostly unnoticed. As a woman at the head table talked of plans for an upcoming convention, Mountjoy slipped small stacks of pamphlets and bumper stickers from the pockets of his cream-colored jacket and placed them on the registration table.

There was no entourage. No scheduler clicking away on a Blackberry or campaign handler whispering into a cellphone. Just Mountjoy, a former state senator from nearby Monrovia and self-described "biblical constitutionalist," here to talk to the Republican faithful about his campaign to unseat incumbent Democrat Dianne Feinstein.

David had it easier against Goliath.

During a national election cycle marked by a bitter fight for control of the Senate and the House of Representatives, the campaign for California's senior Senate seat has the feel of a foregone conclusion as Feinstein, one of the state's most popular vote-getters, holds a commanding lead among likely voters in the race.

"Mountjoy doesn't have the reach in the Republican Party or the name identification or the appeal to moderates that Feinstein has with Democrats," said Terry Christensen, a political analyst at San Jose State. The Republican Party "knows it, and they're not spending money on it. So it's partly Feinstein's strength and partly the California Republican Party's weakness," Christensen said.

'biblical constitutionalist' ?

Good luck Dick!

Thanks for all your work in the past to help secure the Republic and its prosperity into the future.

It's not like we haven't seen the Ca GOP walk away from candidates before and let them fend for themselves, even primary race winners. Oh well.

If conservatives don't retake control of their party soon, it'll be "turn out the lights" time.

I guess there's no point in having an election when the LAT has already iced down the champagne at Feinswine's election party. They do this every election and then people are surprised that the Republican came as close as they did and wonder why the RNC didn't do something for the Republican candidate, a la Simon.

Where are the democrat anecdote stories?

burried on page 200 of a 30 page newspaper.

Yeah, cuz the fringe right wingers that have controlled the CA GOP have gotten us so far in that state the last 10 years.

But .. should we spend money in a district which is so heavily liberal .. and the GOP candidate has no chance of winning ..??

Isn't it better spent in a district where the candidate is making headway and the district is more evenly divided between repubs and dems.

"The Republican candidate for one of California's two seats in the Senate — potentially one of the most powerful legislative positions in the country...."

How is that senate seat more powerful than any other U.S. senate seat?

You forgot to add the sarcasm tag (I hope).

Yeah, cause only only moderates like John McCain can win a general presidential election in 2000 as a republican.

The reason the California GOP has been so dead in the water is that the people controlling it keep putting up people that the mainstream of this state won't vote for.

It's as simple as that.

The CRP will not support Conservatives...period. Their excuse is that they can not win. Well who can win if the party is not behind you...money, endorsements whatever it takes. And yet they wonder why Republicans do not win.

Mountjoy should have ran against Boxer. He doesn't have a prayer against Feinstein. I've got an ounce of respect for Feinstein. Say what you want about her, but she knows how to play politics. She might be a lefty but she's saavy.

Yeah, she's so saavy she voted for SB 2611.

Feinstein deserves the boot.

Feinstein deserves the boot.

I agree but she's a tough Democrat to dislodge.

Take out Boxer, she's the more moonbatty of the two.
