Future in the Balance(North Korea)
The Australian News ^ | 14oct06 | Paul Kelly

THE North Korean crisis is a test of our future world, of whether the security structures of the past half-century are collapsing in the teeth of an assault by rogue states that presages a drift to anarchy.

The powers that condemn North Korea's nuclear test and tried to prevent this eventarethe US, China, Japan, Britain, France, Russia and South Korea. This group includes the permanent members of the UN Security Council and the major powers of northeast Asia. It would be difficult to find a more sweeping failure. The world community and its mightiest states have been played for mugs by Pyongyang's bizarre leader, Kim Jong-il, presiding over one of the poorest, bleakest, most isolated nations on earth.

North Korea has been impervious to pressure or incentives. Kim has a tight grip on power and runs his state on behalf of the military. His real goal is probably a nuclear capability in its own right and not as a leverage to negotiate economic aid, trade and investment to transform his nation. This is the core of the crisis.

Four years ago, an ebullient George W. Bush denounced a new "axis of evil" that the US would challenge - yet Iraq is now the globalcentre of jihad while Iran and North Korea move towards a nuclear weapons capability. These events represent an American diplomatic debacle and betrays the depth of US weakness.

Blockade NK and embargo Chinese goods then sit back and see how long it takes the Chicoms to yank their "Dog" back on the porch.

I believe that Russia and China are pulling the strings on this mess.Never forget they are still enemy states that would destroy America if they could.Only the threat of massive retaliation prevents them from acting openly,if it wasn't North Korea it would be some other trouble spot in the world that they would cultivate into a crisis to use against us.

We are rapidly losing any hope we had of turning the Iranian nuclear threat back. Our only hope is that the PRK will lose it and attack us or our allies. Between the PRK and Iran, I'm afraid millions of lives are going to be lost through procrastination and diplomatic double-speak. This is a replay of the 30's.

" I'm afraid millions of lives are going to be lost through procrastination and diplomatic double-speak."

Certainly possible.

"This is a replay of the 30's."

Exactly

Bush needs to put an "embargo bug" in the Chicoms' ear.
And blockade NK; which needs to be done anyway with all the illegal drugs, missiles and counterfeit money coming out of there every day!

Not anarchy so much as to war, which is not the same thing at all.

A better approach is to remove all US forces from Korea. Bring ground forces home, locate the Naval and Air capabilities in Japan and Guam.

Notify all in the region that we wil keep all current treaty obligations, but we will do it without boots on the ground. If the South wants us to protect them from the North, they will quickly understand that they'll either have to do it themselves OR the US will do it with nukes.

China, Russia and North Korea will also see this as our ONLY option. The South will wonder if we're really willing.

Game, Set and Match. The South will quit pussyfooting around with the North...or they'll break the treaty with the US. Either way we win. The Chinese and Russians will realize they MUST contain the WMDs and insanity in the North. All parties are likely to collaborate...or at least not interfere...in a total isolation of North Korea. They strategic security interests of all parties leaves them no alternative.

my solution takes one phone call
"Hey Chicoms, this is President Bush, either put your "dog" back on the porch or not one container of your junk will be unloaded in Long Beach...or anywhere else!"

Yep, abandon your allies. That'll work!

Encourage Japan and Taiwan to develop nukes. Tell South Korea we're going to pull out our troops and suggest they get nukes.

Watch China wet themselves.

Anyone who thinks the government of South Korea is our ally is smoking crack.

They are an enabler of the North, they provide aid, investment and political cover. All the while ranting about the evil, oppressive US.

It's time for them to quit having it both ways...it's time for them to quit playing both sides against the middle.

If they are not willing to cut off all trade and investment in the north, I see no reason we shouldn't remove all us forces leaving them only with the nuclear umbrella, should they choose to keep it. Additionally, they can purchase any US arms at retail.

THE North Korean crisis is a test of our future world

The only crisis might be that for once the Russians, the Chinese, and the US have acted more or less together and right away at the UN. This might never happen again, in which case it isn't historical and there is no crisis.

North Korea Threatens to Launch F-Bomb

A Korean-Japanese scholar who is considered North Korean leader Kim Jong-il’s unofficial spokesman said that the disappointing reaction to North Korea’s A-Bomb test has left Pyongyang with no choice but to up the ante. “Kim has an F-bomb and he’s not afraid to use it” said Kim Myong-chol, director of the Center for Korean-American Peace, a Japan-based pro-North Korean research agency, said the Stalinist state is ready to do whatever it takes to gain the attention its leaders demands.

“Kim Jong-il was very heartbroken that his big test explosion garnered so little reaction,” said Kim. “He was hoping to inspire an aid package like the one he got from President Clinton in 1994. Failing that, he thought he could count on being bombed or invaded. Instead, all that it looks like will happen is for the UN to pass some inane resolution. People are not taking him seriously.”

The North’s Foreign Ministry said it developed its F-bomb through intensive analysis of U.S. films. “The Americans foolishly exposed their F-bomb technology,” said Kim Fon-du, Ministry spokesman. “The films of Spike Lee have been especially revealing. We will not hesitate to hurl obscenities in great profusion if that is what it takes to earn the world’s respect for our might.”

Kim blamed the United States and others who questioned the authenticity of North Korea’s test for escalating tensions. “If the world continues to ignore us they will have to face extreme consequences,” Kim said. “If the Bush administration makes more provocations, both New York City and Tokyo will be targeted. “There is no place on the planet that is outside the range of our F-bomb.”

North Korea isn't the problem facing us, despite the nuclear test...........it's Iran.

Iran is ruled by that 'book'........right, the Koran.

North Korea will be held in check for some time, because, believe it or not, even China can't possibly like what he is doing. Wake up Japan, Kim Jong Stupid.......Beijing would like nothing more (sarcasm).

Iran is a different story........they have support. Muslims will support their nuclear program to the death. Iran is a far graeter threat, and in my opinion should be dealt with first. Let Kim Jong mouth of for a little longer.........you may be surprised to learn that his 'friends' are finding him a bit troublesome and intolerable at the moment.
