NEW LAW CRIPPLES INTERNET GAMBLING
The Washington Post ^ | October 14, 2006 | Frank Ahrens

Placing bets over the Internet was effectively criminalized by the federal government yesterday, as lawmakers work to eliminate an activity enjoyed by as many as 23 million Americans who wagered an estimated $6 billion last year.

Attached to a port-security bill signed by President Bush yesterday was the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, which prohibits online gamblers from using credit cards, checks and electronic fund transfers to place and settle bets. The law puts enforcement on the shoulders of banks and other U.S. financial institutions, some of which fought the legislation.

The bill's sponsor, Rep. Robert W. Goodlatte (R-Va.), said he opposes all gambling, citing its "ill effects on society," but particularly Internet gambling, which led him to draft the legislation in the summer. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) attached Goodlatte's bill to the port-security measure to ensure its passage and Bush's signature...

Why was a law that was COMPLETLY unrelated to border control.. affixed to this.. stupid! Bills need to be bills for only what it is mentioned.. if it's a security bill.. affix only security related issues.. if it's a child safety bill.. affix only child safety issues.. how does gambling have anything to to with port safety??

"Your thoughts?"

Since I won't register at the WP, I only read what you posted. Considering that enforcement is made the obligation of banks, etc. who don't like the bill, I'm inclined to think this is nothing but another bit of election season window dressing, like the "fence" bill. But sooner or later, the federal camel will get its nose under the internet tent. Some say it already has.

I oppose all pretentious, anti-freedom, authoritarian Representatives because of their seriously ill effects on freedom and American society.

WORLD SERIES OF POKER $100,000 TEXAS HOLD'EM

You’ve seen Texas Hold ’Em on TV. Now, you can scratch and play. For an ante of $5 you get to see what your opponent is holding. The pot goes as high as $100,000. With three hands on five tables - you could beat your opponent up to 15 times on each ticket! Go all in and see what happens!

That is from the Virginia Lottery Scratchcard page.

As for our dear republican leader

Stunned is the only way to describe Tipton County resident Homer Davis when he claimed his prize at the Tennessee Lottery’s Nashville headquarters. Davis is the latest winner of a seat in a U.S. qualifying World Series of Poker tournament event, a prize that is won through playing “$100,000 Hold ‘em Poker.” In lieu of the winning trip, however, Davis chose the cash prize option of $15,000. “I really don’t have any idea how to play poker,” he said. Accompanied by his wife Martha and daughter-in-law Melissa, Davis was thrilled to receive his prize money. “Now this is when the shouting starts!” said Davis.

Thanks for making me want to stop voting.

Good luck enforcing it. Nothing quite like big brother getting two or three sizes bigger overnight. It's a "RINOs coming out as pure Moonbats" party. Maybe we can add another two or three percent of otherwise law-abiding citizens to our prison system after the law goes widely ignored. As long as law enforcement and the gubberment do not have to otherwise spend that time and money catching vicious criminals and defending our sovereignty. Nope. Wouldn't want that to happen.

Sounds retarded to me. Big government telling people what to do, again. Also, poker isn't a game of chance. Roulette is. Poker is a person vs. person game that mostly revolves around skill. So they want to ban poker, while allowing state lotteries, which are *purely* a game of chance. A bunch of stinking big government bull****.

What a joke.

If they say it "might fund terrorism"(if it isn't a Muslim run organisation) or "for the children" Then I know there full of BS.

The media talks about liberals having to "herd cats" but as a social conservative whose group of FR buddies is made up of everything from fundamentalist Christians, to Libertarians, to economic right winger atheists, I believe liberals know nothing about diversity.

I think it says something about conservatives that we can be so different yet cooperate and live as something united.

It makes me think of a successful community of America, pre 60s.

By the way I am very anti gambling and would like to see all vices brought back to the legal status of 1965.
