Former Gov. George Ryan suffered a major setback Friday when a federal judge denied his request to remain free on bond while the appeal of his conviction winds through court.

U.S. District Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer ruled today that Ryan and businessman Lawrence Warner must report to prison in January as she had ordered at their sentencings last month.

Ryan, 72, who was sentenced to 6½ years in prison, is scheduled to surrender to federal prison on Jan. 4. Warner is to begin his nearly 3½-year prison term on Jan. 16.

Hope they're saving a place in the slammer for Blagojevich.

I hope Ryan rots in prison. He deserves it.

Dang, I'm trying to feel sorry for him, but I just can't.

"I hope Ryan rots in prison. He deserves it."

Maybe Ryan was clearing the prisons so that he would be left alone when he arrived there.

Illinois Governors are hopelessly corrupt; already there are allegations swirling against Topinka. If she wins she'll be the next one indicated.

The last honest politician (statewide) in Illinois was Peter Fitzgerald, and he was practically ridden out of town on a rail by the bosses of both parties.

Good. I hope he dies there.

And as much as folks around here hate Fitzgerald I remember he's been chucking corrupt IL pols into the slammer with both hands.

I'll be forever grateful to him for that.

Fitz has been getting closer and closer to the top of the Daley machine.

It won't be long till one of 'em cracks and starts singing.

That's my fervent hope anyway.

The underreported story here is the relationship of former Illinois governor Jim Thompson (one of the few unindicted Illinois governors of recent decades) with the Ryan mess. Thompson reportedly is going to leave his present law firm because of unhappiness in the firm on granting Georgie Boy Ryan TEN MILLION DOLLARS of pro bono legal service. For anybody to be given TEN MILLION DOLLARS of anything is a major story in my book. Now it is also reported that Blagojevich has requested counsel from this same firm because of the indictments of a major advisor, contributor, and supporter of Blago's wife business interests. In the Mafia it is my understanding that different crime families use different legal representation. It just goes to show that in Illinois the Republican Party and Democratic Party must not be separate crime families but just two branches of one big crime family.

Sadly, to a great extent that's true.

In all my years, I've only voted for two Democrats. One of them was a Thompson opponent. Big Jim gave RINOs a bad name.

Is there any reason to believe JBT will be any better than Blagojevich (or for that matter, better than Lyin' Ryan)? I'm planning to write in Randy Stufflebeam.

Probably not much difference. BUT Blago has national aspirations and I'd like to see him knocked out before he moves on to being another Clinton.

I see your point, but the Democrats are so busy fawning over Obama, would they even notice Blago?
