Willie Brown says Angelides will lose election (Schwarzenegger speaks at Brown event)

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger promoted bipartisan dealmaking Friday at a breakfast hosted by Democratic political icon Willie Brown, who then gave his Republican guest a parting gift: a declaration that Schwarzenegger will win re-election "no matter what."

Democratic gubernatorial challenger Phil Angelides was noticeably absent from the Moscone Center fundraiser for Brown's nonprofit public service institute, considering the audience of several hundred was heavily Democratic. Schwarzenegger, meanwhile, landed a prime speaking spot between two of the state's most powerful Democrats, U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer and State Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata.

Angelides trails Schwarzenegger by double-digit percentage points, according to polls released two weeks ago. In a discouraging sign for the Democrat, the California Correctional Peace Officers Association on Thursday released $1.3 million in airtime it had reserved for the final two weeks of the campaign that it likely would have used on behalf of Angelides.

Brown, the former Assembly speaker and San Francisco mayor, emceed the breakfast Friday and closed the session by giving his take on several races in the upcoming Nov. 7 election.

"I think Arnold Schwarzenegger will be re-elected governor," Brown said. "And that's, no matter what, I think he'll be re-elected governor."

Angelides spokeswoman Amanda Crumley said Angelides received an invitation to Brown's breakfast at his state treasurer's office that was addressed to no one in particular. She said Angelides was never personally informed of the event, and that his office declined the invitation.

Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi, a lieutenant governor hopeful, and Attorney General Bill Lockyer, a state treasurer candidate, were recognized at the breakfast event but did not speak.

Willie Brown is still the smartest guy in California politics. He's just posted a bet he won't lose. Poor Angelides!

Phil Angelides -- the non-candidate.

Dems sabotaging their own? Now we have to listen to shrill Phil whine and complain for a week!

Earlier this year, Schwarzenegger was being written off as dead after the failure of his Propositions.

Now, he's coasting along for an easy re-election.

Who'd have thunk it?

You know it's over for Angelides when "Da Mayor" is speaking positively for Schwarzenegger.

Can you imagine how different this election would have been had Westley won the primary?

This isn't a matter of Arnold having coat-tails, this is a matter of Angelides depressing Democrat turnout.

Is that the same Wille Brown who supported Rev. Jim Jones even after the suicide/murders? Mascone was another supporter of Jones.

I agree with you. Westly could have beaten Arnold. But the Democratic base wanted a hard core liberal and now they're really depressed. Their candidate should be ahead by double-digits in a Blue State. Instead its the other way around. To say they have a terrible candidate in Angelides is truly the understatement of the year.

Remember what you just said when you hear talk about RINOs. Democrats don't like DINOs. Real Repubs don't like RINOs ... but they win elections.

Willie Brown is still the smartest guy in California politics.

Most assuredly. When he was Speaker, he kept the Republicans tied in knots, even when the GOP was in the majority for two years in the 90's. Anyone that smart has my respect. He's also the best dressed politician in Calif.

I knew it was over for Angelides when his latest commercial aired - featured the moment when he decided to go into politics: we see the silhouette of a young Angelides looking at a "Dump Nixon" poster while some ancient '70s song plays in the background. Horrible commercial - I actually felt bad for the guy.
