US comic actor Chevy Chase has spoken out against the situation in Iraq and called comments by Britain's most senior soldier about withdrawing from the country "amazing" as he prepared to appear in the return of The Secret Policeman's Ball.
The charity gig in aid of Amnesty International returns on Saturday, 27 years after it first began, featuring stars including Chase, Eddie Izzard, Russell Brand and Al Murray.
Chase, 63, is working with Austin Powers and Buffy The Vampire Slayer star Seth Green on a sketch for the show, in which they play guards at Guantanamo prison. The legendary event was first staged in 1979 and organised by John Cleese, with a line-up which featured Peter Cook and Billy Connolly and was followed by further gigs in 1981, 1987 and 1989.
Chase, who is best known for Saturday Night Live, said: "I'm so glad at this time that we can bring attention to the whole concept of torture and the idea of 'my god' being better than yours, the killing of hundreds of thousands of people.
"The idea of going into Iraq, going into a sovereign country, the ethics of Bush doing that is outrageous. I hope it comes to an end... but I think we have already gone over the top," he said.
"I understand that your top military man has asked for a pull- out. I find that to be an unusual and quite an amazing story," he said of General Sir Richard Dannatt's comments.
He said: "I think that young people are concerned with the situation today in the Middle East. They are more politically orientated than you might think. There haven't been those Vietnam marches like in my generation but there have been other forms of demonstrations.
"What's taken place over the last two years, what al Qaida did to our country, what happened afterwards, going into Iraq, it's hideous to see the photos of American soldiers doing hideous things to prisoners of war. I think it is the time (to speak out).
"I can't believe the reality of the situation we're in today. I hope that something as small as The Policeman's Ball and the gig as it once was will get people's awareness up."
I was wondering what Chevy Chase thought about all this. /sarc
Finally! Now I can get some sleep! /s
I didn't forget how you brought down a perfectly good president and brought about one of the most incompetentidiots ever to screw up America.
So, STFU and STFD @$$HOLE.
There's an error in the first 5 words of this news story.
Comic? When was the last time Chevy was funny? 1982? 1985?
He's Chevy Chase, and I'm not.
Thank God for that!
And so articulate too. I'm convinced.
Why even have the '08 Elections? We've found our Supreme Leader of the World!
Sarc off. Idiot. Hey Chevy, no one cares what you think. Go get a job somewhere bagging groceries and leave us alone.
Crane urinal heir, Cornelius Chase. Gee, I'd change my name too!
Another limo-liberal. P*** on Corny.
I thought Chase was dead.
"comic actor Chevy Chase"
Chevy Chase is funny now? Oh my lord! I've slipped through a crack in the space time continuum and it's 1977 again! Wait, then how am I on FR?
I need a coffee.
Just his career.
Chase, who is best known for Saturday Night Live a brief comedic stint over 30 years ago on a currently unfunny show.
Hey Chevy, no one cares what you think. Go get a job somewhere
And make sure it's not a late night talk show you already tried that and failed.
LOL! That aside, he once mc'ed an event I went to - he was the most arrogant, unfunny guys I've ever met.
