WASHINGTON - The rancorous debate over disgraced ex-Rep. Mark Foley hit a new low yesterday when a GOP congressman said indiscretions with a male page were nothing compared to Sen. Ted Kennedy's Chappaquiddick incident. Rep. Chris Shays (R-Conn.) was trying to defend GOP House Speaker Dennis Hastert when he took aim at the Massachusetts Democrat.
"I know the speaker didn't go over a bridge and leave a young person in the water, and then have a press conference the next day," Shays told The Hartford Courant.
"Dennis Hastert didn't kill anybody," he added.
Kennedy was driving on the exclusive island near Martha's Vineyard when his car went off a bridge into a creek in July 1969, killing Mary Jo Kopechne, 28.
Kennedy pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident, but claimed he did not know the woman was in the backseat and faced no other charges.
The remark may have reflected partisan sour grapes since Kennedy last week helped raise money for Shays' opponent, Dianne Farrell. The Democrat is well within striking distance of ousting Shays.
"We don't know what [Hastert] has or hasn't done," Shays said. "But [Farrell] had a fund-raiser for Sen. Kennedy, and we know what he did."
Kennedy's office called it "a desperate attack."
President Bush, meanwhile, weighed in on Foley, calling the Florida Republican's e-mails to an underage male page "disgusting behavior." But Bush stuck by Hastert and predicted the Foley scandal would not be enough to flip control of Congress to the Democrats.
"This Foley issue bothers a lot of people, including me," Bush said at a press conference. "But I think when [voters] get in that booth, they're going to be thinking about how best to secure the country from attack, and how best to keep the economy growing."
It's just past lunch time here. Pardon me while I go and barf!
IF the one guy on record was correct - he was eighteen and of age.......and claimed he was egging him on for sport. The rest is hearsay and questionable. When you have actionable criminal evidence, then you can arrest him and throw away the key as far as I am concerned. But real criminal cases need real victims and real evidence. Short of that, there is nothing anyone can do.
Just ask Bill Clinton - he's had lots of woman step forward and go on the record and he is a democratic icon. A real case is hard to prove. He played the system and won. Go figure.
This is an outright lie by this reporter. Kennedy never claimed he didn't know the woman was in his back seat. Of course he knew, he left the party with him, got in his car and they drove off together. After the car went in the creek Kennedy claimed he repeatedly dove under water to rescue her and failed to reach her. Rather than going to the first house near the water, which happened to be the volunteer fire capt. and head of the scuba team, Kennedy instead walked about a mile back to the party and took his friend and cousin aside and whispered in their ear that there had been an accident and that Mary Jo was trapped in the car. Horrified the two men took Kennedy, piled in their car and drove back to the scene. There the two friends dove into the water while Kennedy looked on from the shore. After they were unsuccessful Kennedy later jumped from the car and swan to the mainland, supposedly to report the accident, or so his friends thought!
Instead Kennedy headed back to his hotel, changed into dry clothes, went out on his balcony and called out to a hotel worker an inquiry about the time (to establish his alibi that he was at the hotel no doubt) Kennedy then went to bed, arose in the morning, put on his yachting clothes and went walking towards town. While passing a friends house who was out on the porch having coffee Kennedy stopped to chat about the sailing regatta later in the day and how he was looking forward to it. It was then that he happened to look over at the landing and noticed a tow truck and police car getting on a ferry and he knew that his car had been discovered at the bottom of the lake. So he excused himself from coffee and chit chat and made his way over the police dept to report and accident. Some 12 hours after the accident had occured.
Now my memory may be a little fuzzy since I'm going from memory of having read the book, Senatorial Privledge written by his cousin Joe, the same man that was there that night and helped by trying to dive under the water. He could no longer hold his silence and helped write the book after 2o years. So this reporter is either lying by claiming Kennedy's innocence in that he didn't know there was a woman in the car or he's a poor excuse for a reporter.
I guess what really matters though is a least Kennedy has never been accused of sending an indecent IM to another adult male. Now that would really be horrible in comparison!!
Love the that line......balloon payment is waaaaaaaaay overdue. Love it.
Teddie is a fat murdering drunking slob with no redeeming qualities.
fat ted...is a kennedy ...never expect anything more!!!
especially from this fat drunken turd!!!!
Other than those truths, what's your opinion of him? I'd add he's a moral hypocrite with the IQ of custard.
Thanks for that. That happened when I was much younger and I never really got all the details put together like that.
Disgusting.
You left out that Teddy was drunk enough to want to keep away from the police that night. That's why he went to the hotel for the night.
pang!..............FRegards
Well how did he know she was the "backseat" then? This is the first time I've heard this angle. I thought Kennedy had "tried" to save Kopechne, but just wasn't able. Which was it, Ted?
Shame on you. What did custard ever do to you to be include in the same sentence as the murdering fat drunken slob?
"...hit a new low ..."
Actually, it hit a new high.
Your right that was so obviuos to me that I just glossed over it. Good point.
"Teddie is a fat murdering drunking slob with no redeeming qualities."
But you don't mean that in a bad way, right? ;-)
Thanks! Feel free to use and abuse. Don't forget about the "sandwich" he and Dodd shared a ways back as well. Freakin' pigs.
