"Helicopters are not easy to fly."

Huh? How about Helicopters, for some people, are not easy to LEARN to fly.

The guys I flew with in Nam sure made it look easy (120 kts @ 5 feet over the rice paddies hopping over grazing water buffalo) with no apparent effort on their part other than the smile on their faces.

The per-hour accident rate of helicopters is a heck of a lot higher than the rate for all fixed-wing aircraft.

Likely a combo of being harder to fly, and attempting to do more difficult things.

I'll buy that;)

And consider the conditions and stresses that military helicopters are flown under as well.
