I didn't like the Yankees back then, and I was very young, but I recall when Thurman Munson died. Even then I knew the guy was an old-fashioned nose-to-the-grindstone kind of player.

He was a catcher for Kent State in college back in the mid 60's. I played for another team (I'd mention it here, but I don't want Hillary to know who I am). ;-)

Anyhow, Thurmon was a real chatterbox behind the plate that day. He never shut up. But I had a good day that day with a single, double and triple in four at bats.

But he was catching with a fractured thumb, and later in the game ............. he smoked a line drive over the center field fence. The guy hit the ball about 435 feet with a broken thumb! Yoi!

He and I and a bunch of other guys had a few beers after the game. He was a solid guy!
