The principal at a Fayette County middle school has banned all clothing with the confederate flag emblem...

we could MARCH, and were "released from classes without penalty", by the university president, to be IN the marches.
if i remember correctly, i wore a "coat & tie" to the march, as we were INSTRUCTED by the SCLC/NAACP/SSL "leadership" to "look clean,shaved, new haircuts, well-dressed & NEAT". NODOBY looked "shabby, scuzzy or UNkept"! (even the garbagemen were in CLEAN, pressed uniforms or "coat & tie"!
fwiw, those were GRAND DAYS!
fwiw, my ancestor, who rode with the Fourth MO Partisans/First Mounted Cherokee Rifles was RIGHT! so were the other 18 CSA soldiers & a CSA sailor from our family!

NOT bloody likely!
somewhere at mother's, i HAVE a snapshot of the flag & MLK marching in front of the man who was bearing it. as i've said before, i KNOW it's in one of my scrapbooks from "college DAZE"! (as i told someone last year, i'll look for it, find it & POST it "on forum", the next time i go to mother's house in TX, this Christmas.)
fwiw, ONE of the FEW things i disagree with the SCV "leaders" on is their expressed dislike of MLK, Jr & Sr.free dixie,sw
Hmm. Not a confederate battle flag in sight...
By whom?
I can't imagine the Memphis garbage men cared whether their supporters were in uniform or not. Their concerns were more basic.
do you HAVE a point????
fwiw, i'm NOT in that one either AND i was THERE, too!

btw, are you SURE that that pix is from the MARCH or is it from the demonstration, the week before OR perhaps from the STRIKE (looks like the PICKET-LINE, to me)???
as i said, the garbagemen & the students were told to "dress up" for the actual march. those men do NOT look "dressed up" to me. do they look that way to you???
ALSO (and OFF the subject),: the sight of ACTIVE-duty miliary persons IN UNIFORM demonstrating against the WAR in Iraq/Afganistan REALLY is UPSETTING to this old soldier! (they'd better be glad that i'm NOT their CO!)

so what rally did you get this picture from??? i do NOT think it was MEMPHIS. (perhaps BIRMINGHAM???? or SELMA??? or a HUNDRED other cities, where Dr King marched for civil rights????)
me thinks "you've BEEN HAD"!

though i do NOT believe that it was from Memphis, it WILL show you that everyone was "dressed up" for the march, which was TYPICAL for those days. (IF you had been DUMB enough to show up "dirty", "raggedy" or in LESS than "decent attire", you would have been asked to LEAVE, imVho!)
when one garbageman, on the day of the march on Memphis, said he didn't HAVE a coat & tie, one was FOUND for him to wear for the march. i'm sure he was NOT the ONLY one in borrowed clothes!

The decrease in the percentage of blacks in majority white Southern schools in the last 15 years or so might be caused by the increase in Hispanic students across the South during that period. I was surprised to find that Hispanics are already the majority in the school district where I live.
Yeah, but I don't believe you claimed that Rev. King marched under you.
SORRY, but that TOO is TRUE!

Once again, any source is better than no source.
Going out on a limb, here, but just maybe because it's as much a figment of your imagination as the giant confederate battle flag that you claim Rev. King marched under.
Here's an entire book on the Memphis Garbage Strike with the same photo on the cover.
Agreed, that is a very good point.

Well, the man on the left is wearing a suit and the others seem to be wearing collared shirts and/or jackets so they could be "dressed up" depending on your POV. However it was the message on their signs that mattered, not the quality of the clothes on their back... right?

Concurring bump. The uniform should be nonpartisan. Leave the politics to Hollywood actors with chronic disabilities...
LOL!
My great-great-great grandfather fought...who cares!
To Hell will anyone who is disrespectful of either the South or the North. It is our collective heritage.

THOSE REBEL FLAGS
by John Howard Jewett
(1843-1925)
Shall we send back the Johnnies their bunting,
In token, from Blue to the Gray,
That "Brothers-in-blood" and "Good Hunting"
Shall be our new watchword to-day?
In olden times knights held it knightly
To return to brave foemen the sword;
Will the Stars and the Stripes gleam less brightly
If the old Rebel flags are restored?
Call it sentiment, call it misguided
To fight to the death for "a rag";
Yet, trailed in the dust, derided,
The true soldier still loves his flag!
Does love die, and must honor perish
When colors and causes are lost?
Lives the soldier who ceases to cherish
The blood-stains and valor they cost?
Our battle-fields, safe in the keeping
Of Nature's kind, fostering care,
Are blooming,--our heroes are sleeping,--
And peace broods perennial there.
All over our land rings the story
Of loyalty, fervent and true;
"One flag," and that flag is "Old Glory,"
Alike for the Gray and the Blue.
Why cling to those moth-eaten banners?
What glory or honor to gain
While the nation is shouting hosannas,
Uniting her sons to fight Spain?
Time is ripe, and the harvest worth reaping,
Send the Johnnies their flags f.o.b.,
Address to the care and safe keeping
Of that loyal "old Reb," Fitzhugh Lee!
Yes, send back the Johnnies their bunting,
With greetings from Blue to the Gray;
We are "Brothers-in-blood," and "Good Hunting"
Is America's watchword to-day.
PITY that you can't figure that out.
