Doolittle slams Foley but keeps donation

Former congressman gave $1,000 in 2002; Democratic rival wants money returned.

The scandal created by the resignation of Rep. Mark Foley, R-Fla., for sending lurid computer messages to House pages is beginning to infect the hot 4th District campaign fight between Rep. John Doolittle and his Democratic rival, retired Air Force officer Charlie Brown.

Doolittle said in a statement that he had no knowledge of Foley's inappropriate electronic exchanges until the scandal burst wide open 10 days ago. Doolittle received a $1,000 contribution from Foley in 2002 and the Roseville Republican's political action committee, the Superior California Federal Leadership Fund, reciprocated with a $1,000 contribution to him in 2004.

"I'm a parent myself, and this matter just infuriates me," Doolittle said of the Foley scandal.

The eight-term incumbent said he backs House Speaker Dennis Hastert's handling of the matter and does not think Hastert should resign.

But at twin events at which Brown appeared Saturday, the Democratic challenger pointedly noted that Doolittle is part of the House Republican leadership. Brown charged that Hastert had engaged in an apparent cover-up and should step down. He said that Doolittle, as secretary of the House Republican Caucus, was in a position to have known what was going on.

"John, take some responsibility for this corruption," Brown said at a gathering of about 100 or so supporters at an out-of-district fundraiser in Davis on Saturday.

Later, at a Brown rally with veterans in Lincoln, former Sen. Max Cleland, D-Ga., picked up the cudgel.

"We all know what GOP means now," Cleland said. "It means grope our pages. And they are trying to cover that up, too."

Earlier in the week, Brown called on Doolittle to return the $1,000 campaign contribution from Foley that was received before the 2002 primary election.

You know, it is not a crime to be a homosexual(see Log-cabin republicans) it only becomes a crime when a immoral or criminal act is committed, so only if Doolittle knew of such crimes before hand should he give back the money,
otherwise,Charlie Brown, "Put a sock in it" and that goes for all opponents of Hastert and other Republicans as well

First I've heard of that. When was there groping of pages by the Republicans? Perhpas he was referring to the Democrats that actaually had sex with them and got confused.

That's funny. He's in worse shape than I thought if he could only get 100 supporters in Davis
