JOPLIN, Mo. A 13-year-old student fired an AK-47 inside his middle school this morning after confronting two others students and his principal, but no one was injured, authorities said. The student was wearing a mask and pointed the assault rifle at Principal Steve Gilbreth, Assistant Superintendent Steve Doerr and two students, saying, "not to make me do this," Superintendent Jim Simpson said. Simpson said the teen then fired a shot into the ceiling, breaking a water pipe, and said again, "Please don't make me do this."
"It was a very close call," Simpson said. Doerr and Gilbreth persuaded the student to leave the building, where he was confronted by two police officers with weapons drawn. The student dropped the rifle and was taken into custody, Simpson said. The student's identity was not released. Joplin police Officer Curt Farmer said officers found a note in the student's backpack indicating that he had placed an explosive in the school, which has about 700 students. Students in the school were moved to nearby Joplin Memorial Hall, and the school was closed while officers searched the building.
The student was wearing a mask and apparently had been planning an attack for a "long time," Simpson said. He didn't elaborate and said authorities did not know whether others were involved. Joplin, which has about 40,900 residents, is in southwest Missouri, on the Kansas border about 140 miles south of Kansas City. Schools across the country have been on alert after three deadly school shootings in three states in the span of a week, and several schools have been locked down or closed entirely during the past two weeks because of threats. In Pennsylvania Amish country this morning, church bells tolled across the region in remembrance of the five young girls who were shot to death at their one-room schoolhouse one week earlier.
Alright, we'll give you whatever you want, just don't take out another water pipe.

FReepmail me to be on, or off, this list.
I'll bet he was driven to the school by an SUV as well.
Why I do not know.
Every male teacher or principal I ever had either was a veteran or a hunter or a marksman, eminently well qualified to be armed, even in the classroom.
If you review every school ambush/catastrophe since long before Columbine, it is strikingly obvious that, had there been at least ONE such school authority with a CC permit, who was wearing a pistol, at least a hundred kids would be alive today who are now six feet under.
Americans, wake up. If you are too stupid or too scared to learn to handle a gun, and too pigheaded to allow the authorities to be appropriately armed, maybe you should move to the UK or France.
There's going to be a lot of ears ringing. Makes it hard to hear the lunch and the time to go home bell.
Yep!
Once again look for Big Pharma to cover up what drugs this boy was on. Prozac? Ritalin? Zoloft? All three at once? Don't expect to read the truth. Michael Moore managed to miss the fact (gee, I wonder why) that the Columbine boys were both on 2-3 simultaneous drugs when they shot up their school and themselves. That other kid who killed his family and 3 students was on 3 anti-depressants and stimulants at the time.
seems this is a "suicide by public school."
Much like "suicide by police" where the perpetrator points a gun to the police so he/she will be shot.
What are public school administrators and teachers doing to children to cause them to go to these extremes!
Where do those lyrics come from?
I know, actually :-) Was making fun of the general ignorance in the Press.
I do wonder how a 13 yr-old got one.
Journalism 101 "If it's something we don't like, always use a pejorative description, e.g. a semi-automatic carbine is always an `assault rifle'."
It doesn't matter. Now that the writer has proclaimed it an AK-47, it will remain so, whether it is or not.
AK-47: Something that looks like an AK-47... looks fully-automatic... looks military... looks scary to the reporter... looks like it should be outlawed... like all guns... it's all Bush's fault.
Why don't people LOCK up the weapons and ammo??
An idiot kid brought a bullet to the middle school here last year and it caused a big uproar. All it did was make people who are against guns argument even stronger.
My father used to keep the ammo and shotguns unlocked all the time but I was never stupid enough to grab them and take them to school. Seems in today's world, kids are all that bright so why not lock em up?
Oh.
Yeah. I'd like to know how he got ahold of it too...
The way I see it, Bob Geldof is a big leftist and it's his fault for putting this idea into peoples minds. They should haul him into Congress and make him testify as to why he felt it necessary to write something like this.
I agree! Someone has already created a solution.

How did this kid get this gun and how did he get it into school, it's not like you can stick it in a backpack real easily.
