I've been to China and South Korea, I'm familiar with the local geography. It's the assassination angle I'm not buying. Perhaps you can interest Tom Clancy in the plot, because otherwise it runs into some real life hurldes that you can't deus ex machina your way out of.

I disagree. We're not talking about sending in a team to assassinate Li'l Kim. Assassination and sabotage teams are the sorts of things you send to less-protected areas, to sow chaos and distrust. Assassinating Kim Jong Il would need to be an inside job. And hence we look to China.

You know China has agents in the NK regime. There are plenty of court politics going on in NK, and they can be exploited. Thousands of years of Chinese culture make them well acquainted with this sort of thing ... and 50+ years under communism has only made them more ruthlessly capable of engineering it.

If there's any truth to the rumors, Li'l Kim's days are numbered anyway, through ill health. The maneuvering among potential successors has to be going on already. There's plenty of fodder there for engineering a coup.

You my friend have not learned the lesson of 911. The liberals have poisoned the well. Nukes going off in the U.S. will not garner world support for our retribution. The world like the libers will invoke no WMD in Iraq. Nuke could have been anyones... In fact when I posed this same question to a liberal the answer I got was maybe an Illegal Immigrant that was working in the U.S. as a security guard in a Nuclear Weapons facility stole them an used them in retaliation for the GOP stand on Illegal Immigration.... WOW, I said you are seriously deranged. Hmmm.

Unlike bj, Bush probably WOULD resign, if impeached, and you're right, Dick Cheney would then be calling the shots. Stupid liberals better think long and hard as they throw this idea around!!! heheheh!!

There is: you (and the adminsitration) seem to forget that a war is also a political struggle, especially in a democracy.

That means the President has to communicate effectively what the war's aims are and give periodic evidence of real progress.

Bush seems to think he has an infinitude of political time and capital to use. He doesn't, and his failure to keep momentum will probably have disatrous consequences in a month's time, resulting in our defeat in the Iraq after the Dems cut-off funding for the war there, followed shortly by a similar cut-off or withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Our defeat will be total, ignominious, and disastrous, while the Dems and MSM will be celebrating and blaming the Republicans.

I know, sorry, not personal, I just get this knee-jerk thing going when Clinton is discussed. Ugh.

To all

If indeed this a true nuke test and not a 'fizzle' that Lil'Kim is conning the world into thinking its a test. The following will happen in short order.

Japan will quietly go nuclear in about a week.
In about a year maybe sooner they will announce they are a nuclear power.
South Korea will go nuclear but it will take longer. They are not quite as technically advanced as the Japanese also they have this inept semi-pacifist Roh regime that will probably delay the decision.

The long term danger is Lil'Kim will provide a "Sears catalog of destruction" to anyone who can pay the freight.
Selling nukes is a potential major new source of hard currency for the cash-strapped North. Right now their Scuds (The best 1960's technology at New Millennium prices!) are a big seller. I see the following customers for Kim's "Little House of Nukes", a) Iran, b) Syria, c) Venezuela. We removed part of the customer base by taking out Saddam. (In my opinion, probably the biggest reason Saddam's nuclear program wasn't restarted in a big way was because he had two potential suppliers North Korea & Libya. Note: Bush's "hidden" policies also took Libya out of the equation as a supplier! A major major success, that for some reason the WH isn't trumpeted !)
Ok do you want to sit out this off-year election because your "pet gripe" about the GOP hasn't been addressed adequately or the GOP'er on the slate isn't pure enough, consider the above "New World Order". Do you want the Pelosi's, the Rangel's, the Kucinich's and other goo-goo's & gaa-gaa's of the Democratic party to march forth and handle national security? Maybe Soros & MoveOn.Org have some answers?
Remember Lil'Kim will sell to anybody on a cash-n-carry basis. And I mean anybody !

Why wait for the D's and MSM to do it, when you've already put on your dancing shoes...?

We have to accept there is no consistency to current policy. The urgency that took us into Afghanistan and Iraq is gone. We expected to be out of Iraq long ago and on to the next mission. I believe there is logic behind the president's decisions. We are waiting for Iraq to be sorted out, and Iran is next on the agenda. But meanwhile NK gets worse, Latin America becomes hostile, Syria has totally backslid from some earlier compliance, Iran is defiant, and we are mired in the UN.

So there is no consistency to current policy, but there is logic behind the President's decisions?
Seems to me the problem here is, reality won't comply with the policy and the game plans. But maybe the Security Council can twist reality's arm. /sarc

No prob. You are correct. Probably the Dems DO want to impeach Bush to try and expunge the stain of Clinton's impeachment (stain? did I write that? -ugh).

The key to this is China. China has to decide once and for all whether it wants to continue to be a spoiler or a responsible world power. I'm not holding my breath that they'll do the right thing. They really haven't grown up yet.

First intelligent post I saw on the subject... Many of the single issue Conservatives are still pissed at Bush because he hasn't walled off the Southern Border and some other are pissed because we got GOP HOMO Congressmen, but as you know by your post we have bigger fish to fry.

I believe the US is morally justified in doing whatever it takes to stop nK and Iran - but I would bet no more than 5% of Americans agree, because 'whatever it takes' is pretty violent.

If we don't have the stomach for that (and we don't), then we need to decide how we are going to live with a "pistol pointed at [our] head 24/7".

I agree with you about Japan. I disagree with you about SK, though -- they've got all kinds of incentive, not to mention the technical know-how, to have developed nukes long ago.

When discussing the Roh regime, I think it's hard for folks like us to understand the background that would lead to it -- SK was devastated by the war, and a guy like Roh, who grew up starving as a result of it, would probably do next to anything to keep that from happening again. But at the same time, SK still has -- and everybody does -- the civil defense drills. There's more than just pacifism at work: they still expect a war. That's why I think they've probably got nukes now.
