China denounces "brazen" North Korea nuclear test

2 hours, 42 minutes ago

China said on Monday it firmly opposed North Korea's nuclear test, denouncing it as "brazen" in unusually strong language, and demanded Pyongyang stop any action that could worsen the situation.

China also urged North Korea to return to six-party talks it has hosted aimed at dismantling the North's nuclear programmes. The talks, which have been stalled for nearly a year, also group South Korea, Japan, the United States and Russia.

"The DPRK has ignored the widespread opposition of the international community and conducted a nuclear test brazenly on October 9," China's Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its Web site (www.fmprc.gov.cn).

The DPRK is the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, North Korea's official name.

"The Chinese government is firmly opposed to this," the Foreign Ministry said.

The statement used language that was unusually forceful for China, a neighbor and traditional Communist ally of North Korea that has advocated engagement and dialogue over stronger moves such as sanctions.

"The Chinese side strongly demands the North Korean side to abide by its pledges on denuclearisation and to stop any action that would worsen the situation," it said.

"Preserving peace and stability in northeast Asia accords with the joint interests of all sides. The Chinese government calls on all sides to respond calmly, and upholds a peaceful resolution through negotiation and dialogue."

If Japan splits off from the nuclear and conventional umbrella provided by Uncle Sam, China will have achieved its objective in getting Kim to up the ante - to confront Japan alone, instead of Japan and Uncle Sam. China also gets to cut Japan off from supporting the US over a Taiwan flare-up. The abrogation of the US-Japan mutual defense pact would also mean the withdrawal of US troops from Japan, which would increase the American response time if China invades Taiwan.

This would happen if one assumes that having a nuclear Japan would not be to our advantage, that we would not agree.

Obviously, it is, and we would.

Excellent point. A nuclear and remilitarized Japan would have no extra bargaining power over China than the current status quo.

If you take a moment to ponder that, you will see that is not the case.

Not at all. Quite the opposite is true. A nuke NK has never been in China's interest.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that the region is monolithic. Regional animosities in that part of the world might just astound you. They may both call themselves communist. But that's where all the similarities end.

Another point here is the use of a peculiar word. I don't know what it translates to in Mandarin, but the Chinese choose their admonishments carefully.

"Brazen" indicates that in private the Chinese might have been trying to coerce Kim to cool down. Like an unruly child, Kim took the "brazen" step of ignoring Chinese "recommendations". Not a good move on his part.

The Chinese are masters at choosing their words.

I have a degrees in Political Science, World History and Mechanical Engineering. I have an IQ of 158, and have spent time in Japan.

Excuse me if I don't agree with your far superior intellect and your persuasive non-confrontational debate style.

"you are supposed to do this secretly, not brazenly, you fools. Now we have to say this crap to maintain plausible deniability and keep shipping stuff to the US for cash."

Are lavitra or cialis pills purple?
Everytime he "duds" on the world stage he seems to go on a honeymoon or engage a new mistress. I wonder if he ever duds in the bedroom? Probably not I guess, the ladies in his bed have a real incentive to keep him happy...rice in their bellies while everyone else starves.

"The DPRK ignored universal opposition of the international community and flagrantly conducted the nuclear test on Oct. 9. The Chinese government is resolutely opposed to it," the statement said.

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2006-10/09/content_5180203.htm

The state media of China uses a different word "flagrant", rather than "brazen", which is seen in most US media.
