Angelides Seen as a Drag on the Party. Dems fear a repeat of '94 ticket-wide collapse

Worried Democrats said Sunday that Phil Angelides failed to achieve the breakthrough he needed in the sole gubernatorial debate and expressed fear that his campaign's trajectory threatened others on the statewide ticket.
Fellow Democrat John Garamendi, in a tight race for lieutenant governor against Republican state Sen. Tom McClintock, has started to distance himself from Angelides.
On Sunday, the example cited repeatedly by Angelides' disappointed party brethren was the 1994 election, when then-Treasurer Kathleen Brown lost in a landslide and dragged several fellow Democrats down with her.
"When you have a situation like we had in 1994, when the top of the ticket collapses, it clearly has a downdraft effect," said Democratic strategist Garry South.
A recent Times Poll underscored the fragility of the Democratic effort this year. Despite the left-moderate tilt of the state, Democrats held sizable leads in only two of eight statewide partisan races: Feinstein's Senate reelection effort and former Gov. Jerry Brown's bid for attorney general. In the other down-ballot races, Democrats were either tied or winning narrowly.

It's looking up for Republicans, mostly thanks to Arnold.
That's why it's VERY IMPORTANT for all Republicans, conservatives and anyone sensible to GET OUT AND VOTE STRAIGHT REPUBLICAN TICKET FROM TOP TO BOTTOM.
Arnold may have coattails afterall, but only if we take advantage and get out the vote.

Despite the left-moderate tilt of the state, Democrats held sizable leads in only two of eight statewide partisan races: Feinstein's Senate reelection effort and former Gov. Jerry Brown's bid for attorney general. Well, shucks! Maybe the GOP could actually endorse the GOP candidate! That would be a start.

I don't think it has anything to do with Arnold's lead. But clearly enough Democrats may be discouraged to just stay at home. Enough conservatives can win a number of statewide constitutional offices. That will give the GOP a deep bench to choose a successor to Arnold in 2010. I believe it will be Tom McClintock should he win the Lieutenant Governor's office.

You are still on that kick?
Instead of being glad that McClintock and several other Republicans have a chance, you keep wanting the GOP to LOSE its REAL chances, by wasting their money and energy on a race that has no chance whatsover to win.
But of course, you don't really want to Republicans to win, you are just running out of schemes to try to get the Repulicans to lose and this is the only pathetic one you can dredge up.

The conventional wisdom says this state tilts Democratic and is Blue in presidential elections. Even with very little support from the CAGOP and deep hostility from the Drive By Media, its nothing short of amazing conservatives are behind in only two statewide races! If Angelides' support starts pancaking through the floor because Democrats perceive its all lost, even Jerry Brown could be defeated! In a year when nothing else has gone right for the GOP nationally, California may again rewrite the national political story for next year.

You're the one who wants to write off every Republican candidate, FO. We want them ALL to win in November. Arnold is strong enough to win on his own. The only question is are the Democrats beatable? I say the numbers speak for themselves!

Instead of being glad that McClintock and several other Republicans have a chance, you keep wanting the GOP to LOSE its REAL chances, by wasting their money and energy on a race that has no chance whatsover to win. I am very encouraged by several races, McClintock being at the top of the list. But how would an endorsement be a waste of money? How much does an endorsement cost? NOTHING!
But of course, you don't really want to Republicans to win, you are just running out of schemes to try to get the Repulicans to lose and this is the only pathetic one you can dredge up.
Of course I want Republicans to win, FO. I am actively supporting the down-ticket conservatives and want to see all of the liberals purged from Sacramento. The only most pathetic thing about this election is those promoting a liberal agenda with an (R) next to it.

I think Republicans everywhere have a much better chance, than the MSM with their phony polls will let us believe.
It will all depend on turnout, if Republican will pull themselves up by their boost straps and VOTE straight Republican ticket, instead of staying home and sulking, we CAN and WILL WIN.

You've focused only on Arnold on these threads, ignored the rest of ticket and advised us to swallow Arnold's liberal views as the price of victory. Instead of ridiculing Mountjoy's chances, why not help to spread the news and give a good man a boost? Its a very competitive environment for the GOP and I said, I don't think its due to Arnold. Neither he or the CAGOP leadership will appear in public with the rest of the GOP slate here. If they only spent some political capital to make a race of the U.S Senate and state Attorney General's office, who knows, it could be beneficial. All I'm saying is the party just has to try. No need to call names on here.
