North Korea warns catastrophe after border incident

1 hour, 4 minutes ago

North Korea warned of catastrophic consequences on Sunday if South Korea's military engaged in "unforgivable military provocation" like the weekend skirmish at a heavily fortified border between the two Koreas.

South Korean troops fired warning shots on Saturday after North Korean soldiers briefly crossed over the border, adding to mounting tension after Pyongyang said on Wednesday it planned to conduct a nuclear test.

"This was an undisguised challenge against us and an unforgivable military provocation," the North's KCNA news agency said in a commentary.

"It was only the high patience and self control of our Korean People's Army soldiers that the incident did not spread to an armed clash on both sides," it said.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said its soldiers fired warning shots at five North Korean soldiers who had climbed over the military demarcation line despite several verbal warnings over loudspeakers.

The North Korean soldiers retreated without returning fire, the office of the South's Joint Chiefs of Staff had said.

KCNA said North Korean soldiers were executing "normal" military duties on its side of the border when South Korean guards fired 60 machine gun shots at them.

"The South's military authorities must not run wildly but instead deliberate on what catastrophic consequences will result from provocative acts at the frontlines where the militaries of both sides stand tensely against one another," KCNA said.

The skirmish followed demands by the U.N. Security Council for the reclusive North not to carry out a nuclear test and warning of unspecified consequences if it did.

North Korea said last week it had no choice but to conduct the nuclear test in the face of what it said was a U.S. threat of nuclear war and economic sanctions.

So N. Korea secured a convenient pretext for outrageous provocation it may have in store for. It declared its intention to do a nuclear test. At some point, it may feel that it also needs other provocations to get its way. This shooting accident will be used as a good excuse.

If nothing else is happening, this could have been an isolated incident with little consequence. However, in current situation, it could have larger than usual implication.

They South Koreans should have simply made them raise their hands and taken them into custody.

I would guess they were just trying to defect.

The were sent out to stir things up. They probably should have shot them.

This is going to end up like everything else the UN does: "All right...no milk and cookies for you. Go to your room and don't come out until after you've thought about what you did! And if you DARE come out before that, I'll divide your room into North and South Room!"

Dr. Spock with his Never-Spank-A-Child philosophy would be proud.

Has the anti-US sentiment in South Korea cooled since North Korea's been rattling the sabers?

I am so sick of those lying little turds. Let's just take them out.

NK is really trying to find the right buttons to push. What's the next one going to be?

Yes, it has cooled. Pockets of rabid nutball pinkos are still there. However, their number is small now. I strongly suspect that they are Jones Town materials. These are not ordinary folks. They show every symptom of fanatic followers of lunatic cult.

Who cares anymore? The world is going to do NOTHING to stop North Korea or Iran. I am so pissed at all of this. This is what our kids, nephews, nieces, and so on - are going to inherit. THANK YOU very much to all those who refused to do anything. The U.N. is worthless and I am beginning to think that everyone else is as well.

:( Frustrated.

"If nothing else is happening, this could have been an isolated incident with little consequence."

The poor starving N Korean Border guards were probably chasing bugs into no mans land to fry up for lunch. They have picked the earth clean of bugs on their side, so it's quite tempting.

It must be torture for them to have to stand there all day and watch the South Koreans unwrap their sandwiches.

The problem with that is that the innocents are the first to starve.

I'm sure the South Korean military would love to do it, if we'd support them.

I see your point but I haven't given up on everyone else yet - whoever they are.

Thanks for the information. I had heard that but I wasn't sure.

They usually do this in the form of a cross over at the DMZ for an hour or two, usually shots fired. Or, their People's Navy incur into ROK waters in the West Sea, usually for a little while below the NLL, encouraging warning shots from ROK Navy, after which they return to the DPRK.

Well, Tiger, I guess this is a textbook case of REAL "pretexting".

The South Koreans should put grills on the border and have steak and shrimp on the grill every day, and let the smell of cooking food waft over to the North's side...
:-)
