Not Ready to Make Nice (Dixie Chicks in Australia, STILL Whining About Free Republic)

It's hard to believe this petite, well-mannered Texan - sitting opposite in a Sydney harbourside hotel - caused the kind of stir the music industry has not seen since John Lennon sang about being crucified in 1969.

It's the day before the band's first Australian concert on their Accidents and Accusations world tour.

Maines looks younger than her 31 years.

SNIP

Aware she may sound "bizarre", the 31-year-old believes the vitriol directed at The Dixie Chicks was part of a right-wing conspiracy.

An organised group known as the Free Republic set out to bring the band down.

The organisation's power, she says, comes through the internet. The site has thousands of subscribers, all of whom were encouraged to destroy the band's music and boycott the radio stations that played it.

"It's scary how much power they do have," she says. "They can take down someone singlehandedly and I don't think Americans are aware of that.

"It's the same group that went after (former US president) Bill Clinton and (gay actress) Ellen DeGeneres."

In the beginning, Maines says, they tried to fight their detractors. Their management tried to alert radio station programmers to what was happening.

"But they weren't open to it and just thought we were grasping at straws to try and salvage something," she says.

"It was just bigger than we could fight and we weren't willing to put ourselves out there to be made to look stupid if people weren't willing to investigate this thing and be open to it."

SNIP

"For the Free Republic we were a dream come true; they made it their mission to take us down. Apparently we were not supposed to think like this because we play country music."

Still missing the point entirely, Natalie. You have every right to believe what you want to believe. You chose to dis our Commander in Chief overseas during wartime. That's just WRONG. (Had you had the guts to say it in front of a TEXAS audience, you may have garnered some respect, but your actions were cowardly and traitorous.) We, as free Americans, choose to keep our money, instead of giving it to you. We have the right to do that. Don't forget, you called your listeners idiots, and said you don't need them. It's YOUR fault you're a failing act now, not FR.

FreeRepublic: Designate whipping boy for the Dixie Chicks blowing their career away, like suicide bombers.

Cluck on.

If we'd only know of this power to stop careers in their tracks...

Couldn't we have prevented THIS?

Maybe you're in the Opus Dei division, like I am. We don't get paid, we just do it for the joy of it.

But I'm Jewish! We ONLY do things for the money! I know that from my special, original, members' edition of "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion."

a Fierce snake would be nice, or box jellyfish or a blue ring octopus. Man it seems like everything in Australia can kill you.

And don't forget the Sydney Funnel Web spider. I recall seeing a special on them on Discovery, or some such channel. They're extremely aggressive, and tend to roam around. The show said that people had been bitten, trying to swat them with brooms. They will actually dodge the swat, leap onto the broom, run up the handle, and try to bite the swatter (if you don't get it first)!

I still don't understand why the antiwar dummies haven't been protesting Kosovo or our involvement in the Balkans that is still present today. I guess selective outrage allows them to sleep when a Democrat attacks an ally but get their panties in a wad when a Republican attacks a group that has threatened an end to our way of life.

Ann Coulter said it best when she said (paraphrased) that the only wars the left support are those that are not in the interest of the US. When a war is in the interest of the US, the left opposes it. And that's NOT something new. Looking back in history, the left was vehemently against US participation in WWII. Only after Hitler attacked Stalin and the Soviet Union did they come on board. Of course, once Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, they supported the war, but again, only because The Soviet Union had been attacked beforehand.

The Chicks appear, annoyingly, on the Sesame Street Video, "All Star Alphabet" (they do the letter "B"). And I've seen enough music, and played enough myself, to understand the dynamics of playing together; there's a dynamic among the people that is palpable, although hard to explain. It's totally missing with the Chicks, at least on that video. Although the music was technically well executed and sounded good, I got the sense that the other two chicks do NOT like Natalie AT ALL.

I predict a band breakup. The other 2 will dump Natalie someday.

I can't speak to the video you mention, but a few years ago, before the "incident," CBS did a special on the Dixie Chicks, where (I think) Mike Wallace interviewed them) and they broadcast a DC concert. That show made me run out and buy the trio's CD, and I really liked it. They're very talented, and they were really terrific in concert.

But, as has been mentioned more than once here, "if you find yourself in a hole, you might want to quit digging." It seems that Natalie just can't shut up - sort of like Bill Clinton. And each time she opens her mouth, she reopens old wounds. You're probably right that the sisters are getting fed up with Natalie. But they probably also realize that had they never dumped their original singer/bassist Laura Lynch and brought in Natalie, they never would have enjoyed the success they had over the next 5 years or so.

So, they're sort of between a rock and a hard place.

I am sorry to hear that Natalie has fallen
off the wagon again. We wish her the very best.
