It's hard to believe this petite, well-mannered Texan - sitting opposite in a Sydney harbourside hotel - caused the kind of stir the music industry has not seen since John Lennon sang about being crucified in 1969.
It's the day before the band's first Australian concert on their Accidents and Accusations world tour.
Maines looks younger than her 31 years.

Aware she may sound "bizarre", the 31-year-old believes the vitriol directed at The Dixie Chicks was part of a right-wing conspiracy.
An organised group known as the Free Republic set out to bring the band down.
The organisation's power, she says, comes through the internet. The site has thousands of subscribers, all of whom were encouraged to destroy the band's music and boycott the radio stations that played it.
"It's scary how much power they do have," she says. "They can take down someone singlehandedly and I don't think Americans are aware of that.
"It's the same group that went after (former US president) Bill Clinton and (gay actress) Ellen DeGeneres."
In the beginning, Maines says, they tried to fight their detractors. Their management tried to alert radio station programmers to what was happening.
"But they weren't open to it and just thought we were grasping at straws to try and salvage something," she says.
"It was just bigger than we could fight and we weren't willing to put ourselves out there to be made to look stupid if people weren't willing to investigate this thing and be open to it."

"For the Free Republic we were a dream come true; they made it their mission to take us down. Apparently we were not supposed to think like this because we play country music."

Supporting player in Dracula, Frankenstein, and other Universal horror pictures.
Shut up and sing!
I think it was right after you scared Hitlery.
Unfortunately for the Dixie Blix, these stations still refuse to play their anti-American screed.
Hah hahahhahahhahhahhahhahhahhaahahaahahhhaha
God. That was refreshing.
"Nat's dad, one of the top pedal steel players around..."
Yup, the apple fell very, VERY far from the tree in Lloyd's case.
"It's the same group that went after (former US president) Bill Clinton and (gay actress) Ellen DeGeneres."
Maines has spent too much time on Willie Nelson's tour bus.
FR sure didn't take Clinton down "singlehandedly" -- that would make us the so-called VRWC in toto.
There was absolutely no organized FR campaign against Ellen DeGeneres. Maines has been misinformed -- to say she lied would imply she had any knowledge about us beside what she's been told, and I don't believe she's capable of paying that much attention. If she had real knowledge, she would have said "Dan Rather" rather than DeGeneres -- THAT we will proudly take credit for.
I'm happy to report I had it right
: )
Why FReeping Lipton and Unilever about the Dixie Chicks Is a Good Idea, and Why It's Effective
Perhaps she confused Dan with DeGeneres, because they both begin with the same letter.
LOL! I never actually owned a Ditzy Chicks CD but I did have a few mix CDs with their songs...and they were promptly smashed into 1000 pieces and thrown in the trash. She sure is a bitter, miserable person. Someone needs to tell Natalie I don't WANT her forgiveness. She can drop dead for all I care.
Natalie, dear. Sign up with an FR screen-name (it's free,) and log in here. We'll be glad to discuss this with you, sweetie.
It's really quite simple.
You're ashamed that Bush is from Texas.
We are ashamed that you and your pals are "from" Texas.
See how that works, hon?

Just had to stop by to support the conspiracy. Now, back to important things.... BEAT OU!
Slight clarification... no conspiracy... was all out in the open for all to see/hear that the Dick-see Chumps are tainted goods here in the U.S.A.
These "ladies" should quit doing the blame others game and realize that they made their own misery... deal with it.
Scare her? Hitlery loved it....she waved at Satan after a while...
Oh. For a minute there, I thought you were describing Fat Nat.
Geez, so who's stopping all their 'fans' from buying tickets to their concerts? I've yet to see a memo telling freepers they cannot go to a chicks (nothing Dixie about those hags) concert. What's the excuse for the no sales?
I luv the meerkitties ;)
Great video. The lobotomy is a little over the top, but hey, it's Mad. Besides, what's there to lobotomize?
That's not a challenge you want to put to a fat chick.
Dixie Chicks? Who dat?
