Man Beaten To Death In Low-Security O.C. Jail
(CBS) SANTA ANA, Calif. A Mission Viejo man awaiting trial on suspicion of possessing child pornography for sale was beaten to death in a jail unit for low-security inmates, an Orange County sheriff's representative said Friday.
John Derek Chamberlain, 41, was "murdered by an inmate or inmates while in the shower" at the Theo Lacy jail in Orange, the department's Jim Amormino said.
Guards got a call of a "man down" about 6:30 p.m. Thursday, and Chamberlain was declared dead at a hospital about an hour later, Amormino said.
Investigators were interviewing some 140 inmates, he said.

I am not saying that I want to change our system of jurisprudence to the one that led to this guys death. However, if you extend the logic that the mob may have made a mistake, then we need to open up the doors to all our jails and prisons because there have been proven cases of wrongful convictions where the letter of the law was followed. Therefore, we should not punish anyone for anything unless they admit to it. No wait that doesn't work, John Mark Karr confessed to the murder of JB Ramsey and he was lying. So now, we can never lock up anybody because they may be innocent! That is when the anarchy will really take over.
I cannot get broken up about this guy because I think he got what he had coming to him. I may be wrong, but I feel I am probably right.
Oh it's easier than that! How many of you right now are using an out-of-the-box wireless router you picked up from some big box store? Don't know anything about computers? Didn't bother reading the manual? You just plugged it in and it worked, right? Right! It's also working for all the folks within a block or so of your home. They could be downloading boatloads of child porn right now, and when the investigators start snooping around, they'll be coming for you.
When you get hauled down to the police station, you'll be booked, you'll get to call an attorney, and you'll get tossed in a cell. Then, while waiting for your attorney, who might be on a boat sailing to Tahiti, word might leak out that you're a child molester. Then the rest of us can read about it here on FR.
YA guess he was not guilty just like OJ.or maybe he had a bad childhood.
Yep, you got that one in the ten ring from 500 yards... nice shooting...
He was probably in a prisoner group who had similar cases pending... prisoners are grouped by their offenses or segregated in certain classifications by law...

ALSO,
Jail officials might find themselves in some trouble if they housed this prisoner with already convicted inmates...
Punishment without a trial is one standard you've vigorously defended as a belief you hold.
No way. Our founding fathers are the ones who came up with the due process that you hold in such utter contempt.
Calling a fellow Freeper a creep because you have a difference of opinion is abusive, IMO, and should not be acceptable on this forum.
Correct. Technically he was an alleged subhuman insect.
If he got off on a technicality would he, therefore, be innocent? Was OJ innocent or was he found "not guilty"?
Nancy? Nancy Grace?
Aren't these "numerous people" usually charged with some kiddie offense before their computer is checked? And you're telling me that it's a coincidence that some hacker downloaded kiddie porn on the computer of a guy charged with pedophilia?
I suppose that's possible, sure. Just like those hoofbeats could be zebras, not horses.
Did OJ kill his wife? Almost certainly. But by law he is innocent, and if you or I were to walk up to him and kill him, the law would charge us with murder and rightly so.
Remember that the purpose of a trial is not to determine the existential guilt of the accused. It is to determine if he has violated the law. Since only God knows everything, a trial before a judge or jury represents a best-we-can-do-as-humans approach to establishing justice under law here on this earth. The power to establish existential justice is reserved to God; therefore, to do more than try people under the law is to play God. This is why I oppose the death penalty except in cases where there is simply no other choice, i.e. when the convicted by his mere existence represents a clear and present danger to the community.
If a man is accused and found innocent at trial, then he is innocent of breaking the law established by the State. Whether or not he is innocent of violating God's law is a matter best left to God.
Policing is highly generic and probable cause can put a lot of ultimately innocent people in temporary custody. That's why we have jails AND prisons.
I have a friend who was arrested for attempted murder, and he was held in jail until the victim came out of coma and identified her MOTHER as the shooter. Fortunately no one murdered him in jail.
By law, the finding by the jury is "not guilty".
Awesome! That'll teach em.
Yes there was. It took place in the showers at the OC jail. Tried, convicted and executed. I'm drinking a nice glass of cab and rejoicing with a nice cigar.
If anyones handing out a prize for Idiot of the Week, Im putting you in for it.
