Becerra????
The article says the moderator is Stan Statham:
"The debate will be moderated by Stan Statham, president of the California Broadcasters Association and a Republican state legislator for 18 years. "
Sorry --- I was so perplexed I didn't read your entire post -- apologies.
Sorry for the confusing post. A Stan Statham of Sacramento
donated $250 to Becarra's campaign in 2000. Looks like the same one.

Stakes high for Democratic challenger in gubernatorial debate

The Angelides campaign has objected to the debate's format. Rather than standing and answering questions from reporters, the candidates will sit at a table and take questions from moderator Stan Statham, president of the California Broadcasters Association, which is sponsoring the event at Sacramento State University.
Statham also served 18 years as a Republican legislator and is a registered lobbyist for the group.
It's the same format used in the debate for the 2003 recall election, when Schwarzenegger swept into office on a tide of voter frustration. Saturday marks the three-year anniversary of that historic election.
Apparently Statham was the moderator for the debate of the candidates in the recall election.

"Angelides campaign has objected "
If Angelides is upset, then no problem with Statham as moderator!
Here is more -- looks like he is an independent and a registered lobbyist for the SBA, which would explain that he also donates to Dems. He also is no longer a Republican:
LA TImes, Sept. 14, 2006.
"Also, the moderator, Stan Statham, is a former Republican assemblyman who is now a registered lobbyist for the California Broadcasters Assn., the debate's sponsor. The association has reported lobbying on several bills that have passed the Legislature and are now up for approval or veto by the governor.
Statham, who said he changed his voter registration from Republican to independent 12 years ago, is president and chief executive of the association, a trade group for nearly 1,000 television and radio stations. He said he had never personally lobbied the governor and did not plan to do so."

Strange, or not so strange, that the media mentions that he was a Republican assemblyman, but most don't mention that he reregistered as an Independent 12 years ago, and as you both found, he's been donating to Dems.
Is there a plan for a LIVE thread tomorrow?
"not so strange, that the media ....."
Not so strange, as we all know who pay attention to FR!
Hope he is not totally in the tank for the darkside.
