Richmond, Va. -- A group of students at Randolph-Macon Woman's College sued the school Friday, challenging its decision to begin admitting men next fall.
The lawsuit, filed in Lynchburg Circuit Court, claims the 115-year-old school's governing board breached its contract with the students by voting to make it coeducational.
The lawsuit, brought by four freshmen, one sophomore and four juniors, seeks to delay the enrollment of men until at least 2010, when currently enrolled students should have graduated.
"They're in shellshock," alumna Diane Montgomery said of the college's approximately 700 students. "They feel their voices are not being heard. No one told them this college was going to go coed."
Montgomery is secretary of the board of Preserve Educational Choice Inc., an alumnae group formed to fight the board of trustees' decision Sept. 9 to adopt coeducation. Administrators have said the decision is intended to achieve more financial stability.
"I'm saddened that we're in litigation with our own students but recognize they have the right to do that," Ginger Worden, the college's interim president, said in an interview.
Worden said the board of trustees is the proper body to make decisions about the college's future, and added that delaying coeducation until 2010 is impractical.

When we said "equality", we didn't mean for people who disagree...
Gasp! Sex discrimination can be the object of a contract? Someone call West Point!
Cooties!
TF Bad. These future Feminazi's should reap what the sistehood as sowed for them.
Remember during the 90s when you wanted to infiltrate The Citadel and other male-only institutions?
BOHICA!
In my day, we just stormed the administration office and had a sit in. So much easer today (not as much fun) just get a lawyer and sue.
At the Air Force Academy they have an acronym LCWB, which refers to the Class of 1979, the year before women were admitted.
Can you imagine if it were an all male school doing the same thing? Can you say *double standard*? What hypocrites feminazis are.
Yeah, probably some of those congressional pages who have fled Washington.
It does seem fair that the existing students should be given a chance to finish their degree programs before the change is committed to.
I agree. I don't have a problem with an all-female school though I didn't attend one. But then I don't have a problem with an all-male school either.
I do have a problem with a double standard. It has to cut both ways.
I strongly suspect that the reason the school wants to go co-ed has far more to do with finances and expanding its marketablility.
Does Randolph-Macon Woman's College receive any taxpayer dollars? If so, then "case closed".
I agree. The hypocrisy is what bothers me.
can you say citadel?
women and now wnat it both ways....the USA cannot have mens colleges and anything with men must be coed...
for example...after the sullivan suit in 1986..women "journalists" have access to mens' locker rooms of sporting events....how often have you ever seen a man interviewing in womens' locker rooms such as in the tennis US Open, etc....never gonna happen!
always the double standard...kind of reminds one of the old cliched quote from orwell's animal farm..."All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.!"
You are correct. Out of the set of female high school students who plan to attend college, only 3% say they want to attend a female-only college. There's not a big market for an all-girl college.
