The debate between Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown and Fresno Republican state Sen. Chuck Poochigian touched on topics ranging from global warming, stem cell research and illegal immigration to abortion rights, assault rifles and the death penalty. The one-hour event, sponsored by The Chronicle and KPIX 5 television, is one of the few debates in which Charles Manson, Fidel Castro and Mother Teresa were all mentioned by name.
Both Poochigian and Brown touted their accomplishments during the debate but also took the opportunity to denounce the other guy.
Poochigian said, "My opponent sought power and coveted attention" and has spent much of his career seeking higher office instead of focusing on his job. Brown, who served as governor from 1975-83, countered that the senator is "way to the extreme" right of Republican governors Pete Wilson and Arnold Schwarzenegger on the environment, consumer protection and gun control.
Poochigian set the tone early by attacking Brown in his opening remarks by saying that while Brown traveled the globe and cavorted with celebrities, Poochigian stayed home in Fresno and raised his kids.

Moonbeam Brown was blaming the bullets for the crime in Oakland.
Hey,say what you will about Governor Moonbeam but he was first person of any note to get up into Billy Bob's face and call his wife a slimey crook during the '92 campaign.
No doubt more inaccurate reporting - I'm sure that Moonbeam pulled out a loaded .50BMG shell, which is a bullet loaded into the brass, which in turn contains powder and has a primer to start the powder burning shortly after the trigger is pulled. The bullet itself is just the projectile that comes out of the barrel of a firearm after the trigger is pulled, and is not that effective a prop in a debate.
Yeah, its a technicality, but one thing that irritates me is the incomplete and/or inaccurate reporting we see virtually everywhere on virtually every subject (and especially as relates to firearms).
Was it a .50cal round? There's a Brown campaign ad running that attacks Poochigian for not wanting to ban .50cal "assault" rifles in CA. Every time I see that ad I get this mental picture of a bunch of gangbangers trying to mug someone with a Barrett .50, or a drive by with a 48 inch barrel sticking out of the backseat window of an Impala thwacking the side mirrors of parked cars as it goes down the street.
Zing!
Yeah. I saw a brief bit of the debate this morning on the news. Brown held up a .50cal round and accused Poochigian of not wanting to ban them. Chuck pulled the cap off of his ink pen and said the streets of Oakland are full of bodies shot with bullets smaller than this.
Brown continuously tries to paint Poochigian as an "extremist" with constant comparisons to Schwarzenegger and Wilson (both of whom he describes as "conservatives"). With respect to the environment, he also refers to "11 extreme Republicans" in the State Senate (there are only 14) that voted along with Poochigian and he lauds Wilson and Schwarzenegger for "taking a progressive position on the environment."
He says Global Warming is the most important issue facing the entire world and lauds AB 32 as "this wonderful law that Arnold Schwarzenegger signed on reducing greenhouse gases," talking about the AG's role in advising the Air Resources Board in its implementation and in the probable lawsuits "from the big oil companies and from George Bush and his allies." He says he will "be tough on air polluters and making sure we enforce these laws."
Poochigian comes off great--I sure hope there is some big movement in his direction in the next month!
