A Danish soldier died of wounds inflicted during a fire fight in southern Iraq on Thursday, the Danish Defence Forces announced.
The soldier was part of a Danish battalion trying to uncover insurgents who fired rockets and mortars at Danish and British positions in the Al Hartha area near Basra.
During the operation, the Danish soldier was seriously injured when the battalion took enemy fire. The soldier, a constable with Jutland's Dragon Regiment in Holstebro, was badly wounded and transported to a British field hospital where he died of his wounds.
No other Danish soldiers were injured.
The details of where the gunfire came from is still unknown, Major General Poul Kjærskov told national broadcaster DR.
The soldier is the sixth Danish soldier killed in Iraq, raising questions about the troops' safety, said the minister of defence, Søren Gade.
'It's terrible, not least of all for the family members, that yet another Danish soldier has been killed in Iraq,' said Gade. 'But that is the risk that unfortunately is present.'
Gade attended the funeral of Kim Wadim on Tuesday, the 36-year-old Danish air specialist who was killed in Iraq two weeks ago.
Prayers out for him and his family.
