OAXACA, Mexico -- A teacher was hacked to death in this historic Mexican city that has been paralyzed for months by protests and violence, police said late Thursday. A colleague claimed the man was killed for opposing a teachers' strike. Thousands of trade unionists and leftists have been camped out in Oaxaca since May, building barricades, taking over buildings and burning buses. The protesters are demanding the resignation of Oaxaca Gov. Ulises Ruiz, accusing him of rigging the 2004 election to win office and sending armed thugs against dissenters. Victor Alonso Altamirano of the Oaxaca state police said teacher Jaime Rene Calva Aragon was on his way to a meeting Thursday evening when he was killed by two assailants wielding hefty ice picks. Fellow teacher Alma Rosa Fernandez accused militant leftists of killing Calva for opposing a statewide teachers' strike that was a catalyst for the wider protests.

He wasn't "killed". He was MURDERED.

I'm keeping my powder dry. I'll pray for the repose of their souls, but if they come after my family, they'll need the prayers.

Give it a rest. As I've said before, there are reasons why perfectly decent people are risking their lives to get here. Take a look at what is going on in SAmerica. Right now the battle being waged by the knuckledraggers is over Mexico. You don't think for a moment those with actual and real vital intel don't know this?

The borders aren't wide open.

Maybe so, but that doesn't explain the crime rate in certain high illegal immigrant population cities in this country, nor the increased gang activity.

Not in a linear sense; you are correct. But this is also true for any American city pre-illegal immigrant times; the thugs running illegal activities and ruining any city. Increased gang activity? You mean "turf" wars?

There are people in parts of Mexico who are fleeing for their lives rather than be caught up in what is going down there. There are also those purposefully illegally immigrating here for some larger, hidious purpose.

"The Wall" won't solve this problem. The criminals will come up with tunnels. Oops.. they already have done that. We need to find out who is hiring and financing those thugs, especially from which "countries".

I was active in CA's Prop 187. I'm glad that I got involved so early on in the "illegal immigration" discourses. I've learned a great deal more since then.

I keep thinking bunker busters would work well, but I think that they can't be used too close to populated areas.

Stop the presses! V. Fox is going to have to change his comic books and teach Mexicans how to climb a fence! This is the main reason we have so many illegals. V. Fox still wants his dual citizenship so Mexicans can vote in American elections and Mexican elections.

How many years has this teachers strike been going on?

Get a grip on reality. My advice? Take a break from reading those websites where you get such bs about President Bush. You might try actually reading DATA and INFORMATION as opposed to propoganda.

The battle is taking place in Oaxaca. Obrador and his people. Obrador is pulling an Al Gore, saying the election didn't count because there was hanging "tacos" on the ballots, in shortform. Obrador is Hugo Chavez, Morales, Castro man in Mexico. About a month or so back, I read in the Mexico news that these "teachers unions" were being urged to shut down bridges out of Reynoso, and another location -- to essentially seize the cities. The teacher's strike is fairly recent.

Oaxaca is the central route "hub" for travel not only in Mexico but from South America.
