In the olden days if someone had attacked your castle they would have had boiling oil poured on them. And you knew that if you had attacked their castle the same would have happened to you. Neither side expected anything else, and whoever won took their revenge. It was the way of warfare, and each side played for keeps. Losers were quickly executed, buried, and forgotten.
Western civilization must survive before it can forgive.
