High-tech industry leaving New Jersey

NEW JERSEY has always been positioned at the leading technological edge of the American economy. This has long been the foundation of the state's prosperity, its high standard of living, and its attractive quality of life. Initially, New Jersey was preeminent in advanced technology-based manufacturing, but by the end of the 20th century, the state had evolved into a technology driven, knowledge-based, information-dependent economic dynamo. Only by being on the frontiers of economic innovation – only by continually moving "up-market" – has New Jersey maintained its enviable position. But, the economy did this largely on its own, with minimal public policy input.

Contraction begins

However, in recent years there has been an erosion of New Jersey's once-unique concentrations of technology-based economic assets. They have not only stopped growing in the 2000s, but in a number of important areas contraction has begun. The loss of national employment share in our technology-based industries has been steep and dramatic. New Jersey accounts for 3 percent of the nation's total employment base, and that would be the state's expected average share in any specific employment sector. In 1990, New Jersey accounted for 5.2 percent of the nation's total high-technology employment base, reflecting a significant concentration in the state. But by 2005, the state's share had dropped to 4 percent. While this still represents an above-average share, the scale of erosion is quite substantial. And it has affected every single high-technology sector.

Overall, New Jersey lost 8,400 high technology jobs between 1990 and 2005, while the nation added 1.3 million high technology jobs. At the same time, Texas added 165,900, Virginia added 130,000, California added 121,800, Georgia added 75,200, and North Carolina added 70,500.

I love NJ as well.

Vacation there frequently, My family, my husband's etc had homes at the beach there over the years.

I cannot believe how bad radio is in NJ. Impossible to get good conservative radio during the wee hours. Impossible.

At a time when NJ has budget problems, Corzine is spending 100 million on public housing.

What a guy. Guess that's why the sales tax just had to go up!

Merck, Squib for drugs; Johnson and Johnson for over counter meds; ATT, Lucent Tech for technology are a few of the national brands. All HQ located in NJ.

With the downturn in the telecom industry Lucent shed a lot of people. Companies that supplied Lucent also lost a ton of people. Verizon and AT&T have also let go a good amount of people. Plenty of start up companies that used to sell into the telecom industry went away too.

Not sure how liberalism has anything to do with that.

AT&T, Verizon, Lucent and a whole host of other box and component suppliers had substantial presence there.

The only growth in employment in New Jersey in recent years has been in government related jobs, state, county and local. Thus the largest financial gain has been in property taxes to counties and localities.

Following what's gone before, the Dim's in local and county government will demand more state revenue, so on top of the property tax increases we'll get more state tax increases, chasing more companies out, increasing the portion of the state economy held by government workers and contining the cycle of decline.

Oh, and you can forget reductions in state government with our RINOs, we got the Keane wing in charge now; no small government GOPers are they.

Hold on. In 2005, NJ allocated large tax funded grants for stem cell research. The media said it would bring industries to Jersey. What are the Jersey jobs?

Counties west of the Hudson river (bedroom communities for New York City, Camdem/Trenton, Newark, and large urban areas are the Dem strongholds. The true swing voters are the blue collar Dems who would vote GOP if the GOP is not so pro illegal immigration, outsource everything if possible attitude towards the average blue collar Joe. Reagan got their vote when he was for strong defense, welfare reform and lower taxes. The conservative GOP in NJ are in a quandry. We have too many country club GOP who would get pist off if their candidate loses against a noncountry club conservative GOP candidate in a primary. They would offset the blue collar Dem support by staying home or even vote for Dem over social or trade issues and undermind any true conservative GOP candidate in a statewide election. There were many times the losing RINO would withhold support for a conservative GOP candidate after he wins the primary. Of course the conservatives are expected to support any RINO when he/she wins the primary for the sake of party unity. Most of the time conservatives do back a RINO after the primaries, but after being shafted too many times, conservatives are looking for alternatives.

Well McGreevey found a job for his friend, a good job, too!

Head of Homeland Security for a guy with no experience.

Now tell me that's not a thriving job market! /s

At the same time, Texas added 165,900,

I swear Austin adds that many all by itself...weekly.

Trying to vie with Michigan as the No. 1 view of an a##hole state in America, I see.

Forget it.

We're at 7.1 unemployment, and our stupid communist governor will beat your stupid communist governor any day of the week.

Lucent is getting acquired by Alcatel, a French telecom equipment maker. The old AT&T lab are nothing but a shadow of its former self. A colleague said that much of the land in the research park is being sold off -- a better ROI.

New Jersey's loss is Pennsylvania's gain. Average people can't afford to live in NJ.

But with skyrocketing taxes, insurance costs, etc., it's no longer as attractive as it was.

Exactly! High taxes, high insurance, increasing government regulations, and the unions are all contributions to why businesses and people are leaving the state of NJ. The same is happening to NY and Mass. NJ is also very polluted! Driving on the NJ Turnpike up by Giants Stadium and Newark Airport is like driving through a 15 mile long gas chamber!
