Spain Increases Stake in Airbus

Spain to Boost Participation in France-Based Airbus Project

NEW YORK (AP) -- Spain is set to boost its participation in the France-based Airbus project, with an eye to a larger stake in the A380 superjumbo and in designing future generations of aircraft, the two countries' foreign ministers said Thursday.

"Spanish industry is very important for Airbus and Spain aims to boost its participation in Airbus," said French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy at a press conference.

Spain reportedly hopes to increase its 5.5 percent stake in European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co. (EADS) to 10 percent.

EADS owns 80 percent of Airbus Industrie and has agreed to purchase the 20 percent stake held by the U.K.'s BAE Systems.

The French minister said that Airbus was the largest industrial cooperation project in Europe and it hoped to begin researching "tomorrow's aircraft" with increased Spanish participation.

Airbus has come under criticism recently from potential plane buyers due to delivery delays of its A380 double-deck superjumbo.

Douste-Blazy said that despite recent production line problems on the A380 related to complex electrical installations, Airbus Industries outperformed all other manufacturers between 2003 and 2005 in terms of aircraft deliveries.

Spanish Prime Minster Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and French President Jacques Chirac are to meet on Nov. 16 in the northeast Spain city of Gerona to discuss bilateral issues, the ministers said.

I've been short-selling Spain since their reaction to the Madrid bombings.

Spain is seeing AirBus for EXACTLY what it is.

AirBus does not manufacture planes, AirBus manufactures JOBS.

product is secondary.

This is what is killing GM.

Airbust says it will take 10 years to overtake Boeing. I wonder if that's with or without the help from Spain.

"tomorrow's aircraft"

I think I heard this kind of hyperbole when the 'Concord' was unveiled.

I always considered Spain to be a country that finds its own, usually creative way of doing things. When they do things their own way, you end up with something like a Bultaco Lobito world class dirt bike. Not so the Spanish left: they have always wanted to be like France. When they copy the French, the results are not pretty

Since Zapatero has come to power, they seek to be more French than the French. Fly Iberia sometime, then fly Air France and you'll see what I mean. At least Air France has style.

Only a fool would invest in Airbus right now - BAE must be ecstatic that it has found a greater fool to take their EAD shares off their hands!

(maybe in three or four years when EAD hits bottom it might conceivably be a good investment, but Airbus' slide is just *beginning* since most sheep are now just realizing Airbus has "some sort of problem" with the A380 - panic hasn't set in yet)

fascinating. German production of the supposedly upcoming biggest jumboliner from Airbus might be shut down; management is in crisis; France is trying to peddle the non-existent design to China, and that will be more French collusion, because the Chinese are going to insist on weapons technology transfers to make this go...
