CAMPAIGN 2006: Bond Measures -- Governor, Dems chums once more
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 10/5/6 | John Wildermuth

Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Democratic state Senate Majority Leader Don Perata were friends and allies again Wednesday, a day after a political dispute threatened to torpedo a bipartisan effort to pass $37 billion in state infrastructure bonds.

Perata and Schwarzenegger each spoke at a $50,000-a-head breakfast fundraiser at the Palo Alto Hills Country Club, then strolled out to the patio by the golf course to ask reporters what all the fuss was about.

"There's been some noise recently, last day or so, that Republicans and Democrats, specifically the governor and the legislative leadership, are not going to be campaigning for these bonds, as we had said, in a bipartisan way,'' Perata said. "It is not true. Unequivocally not true."

"This is not about politics, it's about California's future,'' the governor added. "Democrats and Republicans are going to be out there campaigning, telling the people to vote yes on Propositions 1A to 1E.''

It was a very different song from the one that Perata and Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez were singing Tuesday, when they hastily dropped out of a planned statewide fly-around with the governor in support of the bond measures.

Schwarzenegger already had used the planned campaign swing for the bonds to duck a meeting with President Bush, who was in San Joaquin and El Dorado counties to raise money for a pair of GOP congressmen. Democrats close to Perata and Núñez suggested the legislative leaders were worried that the governor was using the bipartisan bond campaign to score points against state Treasurer Phil Angelides, the Democratic candidate for governor.

But any complaints were apparently forgotten Wednesday, with Perata describing the earlier partisan dustup as "at worst, a communications snafu.''

The Democrats have concluded Angelides is histoire. It stands to reason they need Arnold. He'd do more for them any Democrat ever could.
