Deval L. Patrick, who a week ago said his ``sole involvement" in the campaign to free a convicted rapist was a letter he wrote more than a decade ago, acknowledged last night that he made a financial contribution in 2001 to help pay for a DNA test the inmate hoped would free him from prison. The disclosure is the latest evidence that the Democratic nominee for governor was more deeply involved in the controversial effort to free Benjamin LaGuer than his statements to reporters indicated.
Last night, after inquiries from the Globe, Patrick's campaign released a letter thanking Patrick for his ``generous contribution" to help pay for the test. It was written by David Siegel, LaGuer's lawyer at the time and a professor at the New England School of Law.

According to Patrick, he doesn't have a good memory.
Is this the next "bomb" or will the pubbies pick up on it????
DNA proved that LeGuer is guilty. (LeGuer didn't know that the police lab had his underpants from his apartment)
Apparently, the Supreme Court (MA?) is going to hear this case soon to see if LeGuer had a fail trial.
If the court decides he needs a new trial.
The DNA will be admitted into evidence.
Unfortunately, the victim is deceased. She ID him positively in the first trial.
Patrick has the rapist and illegal immigrant vote tied up, which means he's a shoe-in on election day around here (Boston).
Why all the concern and support for this scumbag as opposed to all the others imprisoned in MA? Is this another Mumia type thing?
Not if Howie Carr and Gerry Callahan have anything to do with it!!!!
I hope they can change the tide. Patrick looks like a shoe-in from the polls I've seen, though I haven't been following the race that closely--I'm seriously thinking of leaving this godforsaken state for someplace where sane people live.
His positions are repugnant to large majorities of Mass voters, at least by polling.
Massachusetts has a relatively small black electorate - not big enough to be the deciding factor.
He is going to be swept into office by white votes, cast by people who don't agree with him and whose interests he will try very hard to destroy.
Go figure.

Statement to WRKO Radio
Statement of Robert J. Barry, son-in-law of victim in the Benjamin LaGuer rape case on Deval Patrick's letters of support:
"I can't believe that someone who aspires to such a position would make such statements. Deval Patrick should have come forward with something much more positive for a victim's family. I think he's probably a decent guy and I was considering voting for him, but I never could now. This case is a no-brainer. I've been there from the very first hour. Benjamin LaGuer raped and tried to kill my mother-in-law for eight hours. I don't care if he's written books or if John Silber likes him, he raped my mother-in-law. Deval Patrick has got to make a much stronger statement about this. If he thought his statement in Westborough last week was going to suffice, he's got some more soul-searching to do. For Mr. Patrick to make the statements he made is ludicrous. I don't get it. I would not want to see him in elective office."
Strange how this story didn't appear in suburban versions of this morning's paper!
Have fun. Don't let the door hit your A on the way out. BTW please don't come back.
How witty and original. It's clever folks like yourself who're making this state what it is. Enjoy your Section 8 housing.
