You are correct. The IM I referenced early had the teen talking about his fake ID during an exchange about going out to get a drink.

* Were the IMs from BEFORE Feb. 23, 2003 or AFTER Feb. 23, 2003?
*If the former, he would have been 18 on Feb. 23, 2003; if the latter, he'd have been 18 not until Feb. 23, 2004, in which case he's still 20 (as of today).

ABC has apparently updated thier story:
This message was dated April 2003, at approximately 7 p.m., according to the message time stamp at a time when the teen had been 18 for just six weeks. (Some sharp online readers spotted that the boy was technically legal when the exchange took place).
