Sacramento developer Angelo K. Tsakopoulos has contributed $2.5 million to the California Democratic Party to help fund its "issue advocacy" ads trying to link Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger with the policies of President Bush.
The contributions from Tsakopoulos and his company, AKT Development, came on top of the $8.7 million that he and his relatives and their firms gave to an independent expenditure committee in the spring. The committee ran TV ads on behalf of Treasurer Phil Angelides, who won the Democratic primary over Controller Steve Westly.
Tsakopoulos is the mentor and one-time business partner of Angelides, who is a former Sacramento-area developer.
"The party called and asked for financial support to publicize the relationship between Arnold Schwarzenegger and George Bush, and we have felt all along that Arnold Schwarzenegger's support of Bush and his appearance at the Republican convention (in 2004) is really what got Bush elected," Eleni Tsakopoulos-Kounalakis, the developer's daughter, said Tuesday. "We agree with the party that people should know that, that voters should know, and they should remember that when they go to the polls in November."
Last week, the California Republican Party filed a Fair Political Practices Commission complaint against the Democrats, charging that its rivals have been airing the Bush-Schwarzenegger issue ads in the final 45 days of the campaign with contributions that exceed campaign finance limitations. The Democrats argued that they were in compliance with the law, and the state GOP later dropped a threat to take the matter to court.
The ads have attempted to link Schwarzenegger, who holds a double-digit lead over Angelides in the public opinion polls, with Bush, who suffers from a poor approval rating in California. The Republican governor and the president, the Democratic ad charges, share views on issues such as the war in Iraq,

The star-struck voters of California will elect Arnold anyway.
Yes, we'll elect Arnold anyway but it's not because we're 'star-struck'.
You're not from around here, are ya?
Yeah,I'm from around here
Too phunny... Way beyond phunny!!!
As far as the CAGOP leadership it is!!!
I'd say "star struck" is as good a reason as any, at least for Republicans. A whole lot of Democrats will vote for him because they agree with his liberal policies.
Whatever. I believe we've done this to death. If you want to go with 'star-struck' rather than any of the numerous reasons we pragmatists have put forth, be my guest.
Tell you what. Come election day, you do what you're gonna do and I'll do what I'm gonna do.
How can you go from your combative taunt "You're not from around here are you?" to feigning bored indifference?
Whose feigning?
Well either are looking to taunt someone into a debate (post #6) or you act like you don't care (post #12)-- which is it?
I think you act like you don't care when it's people you know you'll lose your argument to, but if it looks like a new stranger has come along, you want to jump up and shout how great your liberal candidate is.
Sounds to me like you're the one trying to start a fight.
Just calling it as I see it. The two contradictions seemed to jump right out like Arnold's signature pen.
Again? Look Dan, if you want to rant about Arnold, go ahead and rant.
This thread is dead...it's done...let it go.
Apparently it's not.
