Nearly six in 10 likely voters can identify Attorney General Bill Lockyer, the Democrat with more than three decades in California politics.
As the state's top law enforcement official, Lockyer is constantly in the news. He recently filed a lawsuit alleging that car makers are causing too much smog. In a high-profile move last year, he put the names and addresses of all the state's registered sex offenders online.
But that's not the only advantage Lockyer has as the Democratic candidate for state treasurer in the November election.
The same August Field Poll that measured his name recognition also found he had a 25-point lead over Republican Board of Equalization member Claude Parrish, an anti-tax activist unknown to more than 80 percent of voters.
It may be an uneven match, but the treasurer's race presents voters with a stark choice on the November ballot.
The attorney general, armed with a $10 million campaign war chest, recently told The Modesto Bee that he isn't worried about the race. Parrish, he said, is "a kook with no money."
Parrish, a longtime Republican Party activist and anti-tax advocate, has a comparatively paltry $200,000 in his campaign account.
He is kinder in describing Lockyer. "I'll just say he's a nice guy and leave it at that," Parrish, 59, of Long Beach said in a recent interview.
The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association is backing Parrish, who counts the rollback of various small taxes among his accomplishments in public office. Thanks to his efforts as a member of the tax board, Parrish says, Californians no longer pay levies on products such as chamomile tea, medical feeding tubes and the painting of replacement car bumpers.

Perhaps it's because he knows where Arnold's skeletons are buried (including nearly a half billion in malfeasance over the Prop 58 bonds).
