RENO, Nev. (AP) -- The Bush administration will host a conference next week to discuss the recent rash of school violence across the country, the White House said yesterday.
Presidential spokeswoman Dana Perino said the conference will bring together education and law-enforcement officials to talk about the nature of the problem and federal action that can help communities prevent violence and deal with its aftermath.
Three schools have been hit by deadly attacks in the past week, the latest attack coming yesterday in Pennsylvania's Amish country.
"The president is deeply saddened and troubled by the recent school violence and shootings that have taken place in different communities across America," Mrs. Perino said. "It breaks America's collective heart when innocent children who are at school to learn are violently taken hostage and cut down in their own schools."
Mrs. Perino said the conference was still in the planning stages, so a specific date, location and other details were not ready to be announced. It was not clear whether President Bush would attend.
Education Secretary Margaret Spellings, Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales and Bush domestic policy adviser Karl Zinsmeister met yesterday at the White House to discuss the conference.

As much as I like their advocacy, they would be dismissed as mere political advocates. I'd rather have the scholars already mentioned, you can add Clayton Cramer and Joyce Lee Malcolm, to rebut the emotional garbage that the teachers will spout.

The President will just have to excuse me for thinking this "summit" is being used for political cover and NOT for finding realworld solutions.

On the school hostage/murder stories and strange, second-day additions to "evidence," I'm reminded of a "Leave It to Beaver" episode. In it, the Beav told a lie and attempted to cover it with another lie. As a very experienced policeman once told me (after the Academy), "You'll see things that you wouldn't have previously believed. And sometimes, it will be easier to believe a lie than it will be to believe the truth." He was right.
As for further officious violations of the Second Amendment, yes, those are on the way.
Prediction 2: Public Schools will be be made to resemble prisons even more than they already do.
Prediction 3: We will still have high-profile school shootings in the future.
What makes you assume President Bush has *not* breathed prayer heavenward? What makes you assume he has not been in contact somehow with key Amish folk?

Think about it. This guy(who killed the amish kids) was a DADDY and somehow could walk into a school and kill little girls!! There is something wrong with this mans brain and its obviously the same thing that we've seen in ALOT of people the last 10 years and guess what? All the news and media coverage that I have seen 24/7 on these instances I have never seen a psychologist come on and tell us what the hell is wrong with these peoples brains!

Oh, this is just simply great. Take the blame for Katrina, and now this. Just what conservatives want to hear; it is the fault of the federal government that the nation's children are sick and have no moral compass. More legislation is what we need, I tell ya!
Bush has surprised us before. I don't have a lot of hope, but I'm willing to see what he says before piling on.
