I would be very surprised if Sherwood wins again. I have said repeatedly that he is one of the single most vulnerable incumbents, nevermind just in PA. The fact that he is running again is outrageous, the state party should've forced his removal.

"The fact that he is running again is outrageous"

Indeed, it shows that serving a long time in Congress can foster s sense of entitlement. This has been demonstrated again and again, by the likes of Conrad Burns, Don Sherwood, and others before them.

Republicans had better hope for even just one or two upsets in Demo districts to make up some ground. I wonder how strong of an effort they are making. I really hope they can do that because so many GOP seats are said to be vulnerable. Theyre going to need a lot of luck to stay in the majority. At least they have a lot of $$.

I absolutely agree that he should not have run again. I don't know know much about the dynamics of the race/district, but I see no reason to disbelieve this poll given that CD got a very similar result.

Sherwood's district is a pretty rural one that avoids the industrial slums that Bush carred by 20%. It has rather down to earth folks, who still think like most folks did back say in the 1950's, and far fewer do now, that simply isn't cosmopolitan enough to have tolerance for older man maintaining a mistress on the side. It is a very long way from Paris. I once had a client who lived in Paris, who told me that he didn't trust any politician that did NOT have a mistresss. Paris is not located in the 10th district of Pennsylvania.

Back in 2005, we knew Sherwood was bad news. But did the GOP House listen? Noooo. I bet Sherwood, Ney, Delay and other vulnerables received assurances from Hastert that he will find some way to protect them, via campaign funds and pork spending.

In fact, Phil Crane seriously considered retiring in 2004. But Hastert urged him to run again. Hastert plans don't work very well do they? I fear what is plaguing the IL GOP is infecting our party on a national scale. A Culture of Dysfunction ism.

He claimed that he only punched her car after she cut in front of him.

But I still hope it sinks his candidacy.

It's time for a fresh face as the GOP's House leader. Dennis Hastert was the right person when Newt stepped down, but now someone else is needed.

I hope Bohner and Hastert retire in 2008. We need Mike Pence and the Shag Man from AZ to lead the House.

He punched her not the car. that is why he was arrested for Assault. Redstate.com nailed it pretty good, they even had a scan of the Arrest report.

Folks, threads like this must serve to energize our efforts. Find vulnerable districts with worthy GOP candidates and send them money or volunteer time on their phone bank, if you can get there in the final 72 hrs.

We simply must hold both houses of Congress. If we lose either, the Dems will spend millions non stop on televised investigations into Bush -- and all that will be prepartory to next year's 24/7 impeachment discussion.

The way to stop that is volunteering. The last 72 hrs tells the tale. When you see threads like this, be inspired.

You are so right. This weekend I had plans to cut my grass. I guess I'm going to let my grass grow until after Nov 7th. I'm going try to salvage Congress.

Excellent. That is the correct response to all negative polls. And pick your target well. Your time and money should be spent where the districts are at risk. Not those out of reach.

Pence went native on Immigration, so I'd think that would be unsound. Were we to replace the leadership, we might look to other junior members that aren't necessarily showing up on the radar screen. Shadegg is good, and Eric Cantor of VA (who served briefly as acting Majority Whip) is another with leadership material. Cantor has the potential to become the first Jewish Speaker in U.S. history.
