Hastert denies GOP saw Foley's "vile" messages (Conservatives calling for resignations.)
The Washington Times ^ | October 3, 2006 | Charles Hurt

Posted on 10/03/2006 6:43:59 AM PDT by no dems

House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert said yesterday that Republican leaders had not previously seen the more lurid Internet "instant messages" sent by disgraced ex-Rep. Mark Foley as influential conservatives began calling for party leadership resignations over the handling of the matter.

Mr. Hastert said "No one in the Republican leadership ... saw those messages until last Friday when ABC News released them."

Still, several well-known conservatives called for Republican resignations because Hastert and other leaders did not act aggressively enough when they first learned of a separate set of "overly friendly" e-mails that Mr. Foley had sent to another teenage former page.

"Speaker Hastert had knowledge of Congressman Foley's inappropriate behavior and chose to protect a potential pedophile" David Bossie, president of the conservative group Citizens United, said yesterday. "If Speaker Hastert was willing to sacrifice a child to protect Representative Foley's seat and his own leadership position, then he surely does not share our American and conservative values."

"When you have a 50-year-old man -- who is a known homosexual -- who wants a picture of a 16-year-old boy, that should send out some alarm bells," he said. "This is almost like a Clinton-type response."

"That e-mail they call an 'overly friendly' e-mail -- that had predator stamped all over it. There's just no one in this country that can suggest otherwise," said Bay Buchanan, the president of American Cause.

THANK YOU!!! All the Pubbie bots on this thread have begun to make me feel worse than Foley and Hastert SHOULD feel.

Dear God in heaven; you people are wearing me out. I don't care what the Dems did or knew. This was on Fat Denny's watch. What Foley did was so despicable. Why are you guys turning the table on this thing?

I assume you all defened Bill Clinton when he was getting BJs from a young intern in the Oval Office huh?

Give me a break!!!! If your party loyalty doesn't stop at the line of immorality, where does it stop?

If I were Hastert, I'd call a press conference and say, THIS IS SO INSULTING TO ME PERSONALLY. If I had read the vile IM's you're reading about today, not only would I have made sure he resigned, I would have demanded prosecution. By saying I did nothing, you are making a judgement on my character this is not only wrong, but worthy of righteous indignation. HOW DARE YOU ALL ACCUSE ME OF THIS.

Don't be dumb and disingenuous.

No one's defending Foley and you know it.

Oh, please. Go find yourself a pulpit and call me on Sunday.

Hastert did what he is charged with doing: he investigated, counseled and warned based on the "evidence" in hand. In the private sector the law calls this "due diligence" and saves companies millions in future lawsuits.

The IM turned up this week...even though some in the media had them since August 2005. Are you calling for their resignation, too?

You are a victim of the precise knee-jerk reaction the Demonrats are counting on.

How many congressman ask pages for picures themselves in case they need to write a reference? How many have staffers do such legwork?

Excuse me? You didn't know that when a House Member is involved in immorality that is a sex crime, i.e. sex with a minor, that the Speaker of the House has a responsibility to monitor that behavior? You didn't know that? You're kidding; right?

Man, if you're serious then this nation has more serious problems than I thought.

The emails are sanitary and non sexual

Are you:
a.) From another planet?
b.) Just naive?
c.) Really, really stupid?
d.) A willfully ignorant Party faithful?

Oh, please. Go find yourself a pulpit and call me on Sunday.

This comment just proves that the majority of the people in the GOP just want us, who are Evangelical Christians, around for our votes every two years and keep our mouths shut when the party of "morality" proves to be not that moral at all especially when it comes to defending those who cover up for and enable child molesters.

You'll not keep us on the plantation in meek submission like the DemocRATS have done to the blacks ever since the 1960s. We will not stand for it.

I will, however, keep copies of this thread and your comment for when the day comes that I need to remind Evangelical Christians of what you and the other moderates in the GOP really think of us.

Just keep pushing the envelope and you might find out just how well you can do without us in future elections. We've been here since Reagan ran in 1980. But, don't take us for granted.

Power corrupts and people in Washington hate to lose their power; even if it means a cover-up.

What is almost as appalling, and disgusting, is the number of Republicans supporting Hastert.

What is appalling but so typical of you, is you taking a sanctimonious stand AGAINST speaker Hastert, and confusing e-mail and IMs.
