It means:

I am one of those white South Africans who left, six years ago, and for the reasons mentioned. Getting prevented from reaching the top in big companies despite being well-qualified, and getting shot at in our own home is no way to raise my children. I hope they were young enough when we arrived in the USA so that they will see themselves as Americans.
