Conservatives Call on Hastert to Resign

by Robert B. Bluey

House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R.-Ill.) is coming under fire from conservatives for his failing to take action against disgraced Rep. Mark Foley (R.-Fla.), who resigned last week for inappropriate communications with teenage pages.

“Speaker Hastert had knowledge of Congressman Foley’s inappropriate behavior and chose to protect a potential pedophile and powerful colleague over a congressional page,” said David Bossie, president of conservative advocacy group Citizens United.

Joining Bossie’s call for Hastert to resign was nationally syndicated radio show host Michael Reagan.

“Any member of Congress who was aware of the sexual emails and protected the congressman should also resign effective immediately,” Reagan said. “I was sexually abused by a day camp counselor at age eight and also made to be part of child pornography.”

Hastert said in a news conference Monday that neither he nor other Republican leaders knew about the lurid exchanges between Foley and the teenage pages dating back to 2003. “As a parent and speaker of the House, I am disgusted,” Hastert said.

However, that didn’t blunt the criticism from Bossie and Reagan. Bossie’s group, which is best known for producing the movies “Celsius 41.11” in 2004 and the just-released “Border War,” said Hastert had failed in his duty to investigate the matter “before it became a public relations problem.” Bossie said the problem may cost Republicans control of the House in November as a result.

“This inaction demonstrates a lack of leadership on Speaker Hastert’s part, and calls into question both his judgment and character,” Bossie said. “If Speaker Hastert was willing to sacrifice a child to protect Rep. Foley’s seat and his own leadership position, then he surely does not share our American and conservative values.”

I believe that he said that he had heard that e-mails had been sent. He did not know the content of those e-mails. [My words. His may have been different but that was the gist of the comment]

I, myself, am not enthused with some Republicans but they are all that stand between us and the communists [Democrats]so until something better comes along I support them.

You should know by now. Only Lefties get to keep their jobs after totally disgracing themselves. Why? Cause Lefties never really 'feeeeeeel' disgraced. They HAVE no shame re: what they do or what other lefties do, ergo, they can't be made to feel shamed.

It's just the old double standard that's always been in DC.

I'm no big fan of Hastert, but I really am sick of watching Republicans eating there own. Reminds me of a cartoon I saw years ago of a guy who had cut a chunk out of his butt, and was eating it, as he said: "No wonder everybody keeps chewing on it. It's delicious."

All of our fellow Conservatives with an IQ above single digits, is aware to the fact that the Dems and their abetters in their MSM are mixing E-mail with Instant messages and counting on everyone being too stupid to know the difference.

Speaker Hastert was aware of the normal sounding E-mails, but had no knowledge of the perverted IMs.

The Republican pervert resigned and got the hell out of Congress. The Democrat pervert's remain in Congress, and flaunt their perversion all over DC and before the whole damn world.

The Dems should take out their own stinking garbage, before filing a complaint against their neighbor's who have already done so.

In other words, this, like everything else the DemRats have attempted re: destroying Bush and the GOP, is going to backfire on them big time.

Awww. Shucks. That's a shame. (grabbing popcorn)

Yeah...and Beckell is saying that since Foley was Gay, any emails to Pages should've been suspicious. This is going to be interesting as some Dems are going to be put in the position of associating homosexuality with pedophilia...something their constituency isn't going to like.

"I've come to the point where I'm wanting the 'RATS to take over the House and Senate in November."

Have you looked at who the Dims are lining up for potential committee chairmen? It's terrifying.

I loved Tom! Bring him back tomorrow!

We go to war with the army we have, and Hastert is not bottom drawer by any means. He seems to be leading on this issue as well as a man can... and with righteous indignation to boot.

I ws also wondering what proof they had that Hastert knew. If they do they should let us in on it.

This is not the time for the various wings of the party to start settling old scores and looking for influence.

You're so right; and "real, true" conservatives NEVER miss a chance to make fools out of themselves.

What is Human Events agenda in this?

I don't think Hastert should resign from the leadership until *after* the election. Yes, there's no doubt Haster screwed the pooch back when and is stupid and weak, but his immediate resignation won't help.

BUT, why isn't Rove taking charge of this situation. It can be turned around.

1) Insist on a Congressional investigation. "Who knew but hid the information and didn't protect these pages" is a block-buster topic for open hearings. Seeing the scumbag reporters squirm would be delicious.

2) It's not just about Foley but all Congress-critters who're preying on kids. In fact it's about Congressional staff too, esp. those in positions of authority. Everyone should have to tell about their personal contacts with pages. I bet inappropriate contacts are much more common than we'd like to think.

3) It's not just about the past but the future as well. The page program obviously needs an overhaul.

Turn this into a witch hunt for-the-children. I'm betting the Ds have a lot more pervs than the Rs and they know it. It'd be great to hear them squeal.

Look, if I can think of a strategy to turn it around, why can't Hastert? That's why he's got to go. Sure, there's a place for mechanics, but let's get a leader in there who'll kick ass all the time, and one who won't get into these situations in the first place.

I hope you're right that he can survive this and the GOP can maintain control of the house (and the senate).

After listening to Hannity and Reagan whine about this today, it seems to me that the DemocRATS would do a better job in Congress. The only one who made any sense today was Rush. Hannity and Reagan are demanding to know the names of EVERY Republican who knew about this before it became public and didn't do anything to save "the Churldren." They both sounded like they were leading a lynch mob. "I WANT NAMES! GIMME NAMES!" They sounded like a couple of flaky, wild-eyed DemocRATS. The DemocRATS and their toadies in the "media" sure nailed us with this October surprise. Republicans are now calling for the heads of Republicans. I've never seen a DemocRAT do that.

So the conservatives want Hastert to resign because Foley sent "dirty" emails to some kid. Wow! I wonder if he also used the "n" word in 1970.

I don't want to beat a dead horse, but here's what's on Drudge:

WASHINGTON TIMES ON TUESDAY WILL CALL FOR SPEAKER HASTERT'S RESIGNATION, NEWSROOM SOURCES TELL DRUDGE... DEVELOPING... 'House Speaker Dennis Hastert must do the only right thing, and resign his speakership at once... Mr. Hastert has forfeited the confidence of the public and his party, and he cannot preside over the necessary coming investigation, an investigation that must examine his own inept performance'... -- Washington Times, October 3, 2006...
