Feds dismiss report that troops are on standby for Oaxaca duty

Federal authorities are denying a report in today's El Universal newspaper that thousands of federal police are on alert to sweep into Oaxaca on a moment's notice.

A federal police official noted the story by reporter Jorge Alejandro Medellin had no official source and said that no such alert has been issued. (Of course, the federal official also said his name could not be published.)

The paper reported that under an operation known as "Cyclone 5" the federal government has told 3,000 Federal Preventative Police officers they can sleep in their homes in Mexico City, but that they must be ready to go to the colonial city to restore order there.

The PFP, as the body is known, operates largely like a military force, including sending truckloads of troops into conflict areas, from clashes with drug traffickers to civil disorder.

Thousands of them were used to protect Mexico's congress in early September when President Vicente Fox gave his state of the nation address.

It will be a HUGE mistake to turn the guns on the unarmed peasants. V. Fox is not the brightest so I don't doubt anything.

I think there is enough information for most to assume there are military/police forces nearby. Today is not the best day as it is the anniversary of another massacre.

All the helicopter overflights are also making people nervous. Of course, the government claims these are resupply flights. What does anyone expect? It's not like they are going to issue a press release "Yes, we are mobilizing troops for a dawn attack!"

I'm actually kind of surprised that Dane is regurgitating the denial. And he's doing on his blog. Why?

The government SHOULD take charge of this chaos. The election was fair, Obrador is an ass.
